Race guide

Updated 29 June 2026

The Volokki Trail is a 30 km trail run organised by Sonkasport, tracing a point-to-point route through the forests and wilderness landscape of Sonkajärvi in the North Savo region of Finland. Starting at Susi-Kervinen and finishing at Ruukin Tupa in Jyrkkä, the course threads together a string of lean-tos, wilderness huts, campfire sites, and natural landmarks that give it a genuinely backcountry character. With just 91 metres of total ascent and a high point of only 190 m, this is an almost entirely flat race by trail running standards — but do not mistake low elevation gain for an easy day. Finnish forest terrain means rooted singletrack, boggy sections, soft ground, and long stretches far from any road. The appeal here is immersion in the wild Finnish countryside rather than mountaineering challenge, making it an excellent choice for runners stepping up from road to trail or looking for a fast, flowing long-distance effort in nature.

Course & Terrain

The route runs point-to-point from Susi-Kervinen (149 m) to Ruukin Tupa (168 m), covering 30 km through classic Finnish boreal forest. Checkpoints are spaced regularly — every 2.5 to 6 km — giving the course a reassuring rhythm and ensuring you are never more than a few kilometres from a named landmark. The terrain is typical of this part of North Savo: pine and spruce forest, soft peaty underfoot conditions, rooted paths, and occasional open heathland around the ridge and kangas (esker) sections. Notable waypoints include the Uuranholi ravine at 7.5 km, which provides the only real topographic drama on an otherwise level course, and the Kangaslampi ridge campfire site at 25.5 km, which sits at 176 m — the closest the route comes to its 190 m high point. The Hankalampi bird tower at 14.5 km marks roughly the halfway point and is a useful mental landmark. Between checkpoints the path can be narrow and technical underfoot, so consistent footing and attention to trail markers matter more than raw speed.

Decisive Sections — Where the Race Is Won or Lost

Given the minimal elevation change, this race is decided not on climbs but on the cumulative effect of 30 km of uneven forest floor and the runner's ability to maintain rhythm through the mid-section. The stretch from the Salminen lean-to aid station at 21 km through to Kangaslampi ridge at 25.5 km is where fatigue in the legs becomes most relevant — by this point you have been running on technical ground for two hours or more and there is still 4.5–8.5 km to the finish depending on your pace. The Uuranholi ravine at 7.5 km is the one section where the terrain demands respect early in the race — a ravine in Finnish forest means uneven, potentially slippery ground with a short descent and re-ascent. Runners who throw caution to the wind here risk scrambling their footing for the rest of the race. The long mid-section between Eräholi at 11.5 km and Salminen at 21 km — nearly 10 km without a formal aid station — is the psychological crux: stay composed, keep the effort honest, and arrive at Salminen in good shape.

Pacing & Fuelling Strategy

With a flat profile and a single confirmed aid station at Salminen (21 km), fuelling self-sufficiency is key for the first 21 km. Carry enough water and calories to cover the opening 21 km comfortably; Finnish summer conditions can be surprisingly warm and humid, and sweating more than expected in the forest is common. Top up fully at Salminen and treat the final 9 km as a controlled push to the finish at Ruukin Tupa. Pacing should be conservative for the first 10 km — the rooted, soft terrain punishes early overexuberance in the legs. Aim for an even or very slightly negative split: the back half of the course, particularly the Kangaslampi ridge section, rewards runners who have preserved their legs. For most participants this is a race of 3–5 hours, so fuelling every 45–60 minutes with familiar trail food and maintaining steady hydration throughout is a sound approach. Do not rely on finding water between checkpoints — treat each lean-to and hut as a resupply opportunity even if only to confirm your position.

Conditions to Expect

Sonkajärvi in Finland's North Savo region experiences a continental northern climate. If the event is held in summer, expect long daylight hours, temperatures ranging from cool to warm (roughly 10–22 °C), and the possibility of afternoon humidity in the forest. Mosquitoes and other insects are a genuine consideration in Finnish boreal forest during the warmer months — a light layer of repellent and a cap are practical items. The forest floor retains moisture, and even in dry conditions the trail can be soft and boggy in low-lying sections. After rain, rooted paths become slippery and peaty ground absorbs water quickly, adding significant resistance underfoot. Waterproof or water-resistant trail shoes with good grip are strongly recommended regardless of the forecast. Visibility in dense forest can be limited, so staying alert to course markings at all times is essential — particularly between the more widely spaced checkpoints in the middle section of the route.
