Race guide

Updated 29 June 2026

The NUTS Karhunkierros 166K is a point-to-turnaround-and-back trail ultra based in Ruka, Kuusamo, in northern Finland. The race follows the celebrated Karhunkierros (Bear's Ring) trail system, taking runners 83 km out to the Hautajärvi / Napapiiri turnaround before retracing the route back to Ruka Village — 166 km in total with 3,630 m of cumulative elevation gain. Despite its northerly setting, the course is not defined by dramatic alpine peaks; the high point sits at just 491 m, so the challenge comes instead from relentless, technical trail underfoot, remote forest and canyon terrain, and the sheer accumulation of distance and time on your feet in subarctic conditions. With a mandatory Saturday 06:00 cut-off at the turnaround (83 km, Hautajärvi) and a Sunday 20:00 finish cut-off back in Ruka, the race demands solid pacing and self-sufficiency through long stretches of wilderness. Crew access is available at Ruka, Oulanka Visitor Centre (both outbound and inbound) and Hautajärvi, giving athletes and their teams several well-spaced windows to reassess and resupply.

Course & Terrain

The route runs out-and-back along one of Finland's most iconic long-distance trails, threading through Oulanka National Park and the surrounding boreal wilderness. From Ruka Village (358 m) you drop gradually through forest to the Konttainen Aid Station at 7 km, then continue descending toward the Oulanka Visitor Centre at 28 km (230 m), passing through classic northern Finnish terrain: pine and birch forest, boggy sections, wooden boardwalks over wetlands, and the dramatic river canyon gorges that make Karhunkierros famous. The route continues losing altitude overall as it heads northeast toward Juuma / Basecamp Oulanka at 51 km (145 m) — the lowest point on course. From Juuma, the trail climbs back toward Hautajärvi / Napapiiri (239 m) at 83 km, the turnaround. The return leg is essentially the mirror image, finishing with a final climb back up to Ruka Village (358 m). Underfoot conditions vary significantly: expect rooted and rocky singletrack, slippery wooden bridges and duckboards, sandy forest paths and muddy lowland sections. The technical nature of the trail demands focus throughout, especially in the dark.

Decisive Sections: Where the Race Is Won or Lost

Despite the modest elevation numbers, several sections consistently sort the field. The canyon sections in and around Oulanka National Park — particularly between Oulanka Visitor Centre (28 km) and Juuma (51 km) — involve steep, rooted descents and sharp re-ascents out of river gorges that are slow, technical and quad-punishing. These sections arrive early enough that many runners go through them too fast outbound, only to pay the price on the return leg. The 32 km stretch from Juuma (115 km inbound) back through Oulanka to Konttainen (159 km) is where races unravel: legs are heavy, the terrain is as technical as ever, and the final climb to Ruka from Konttainen at 159 km through to the 166 km finish demands real mental and physical reserves. Anyone who has not banked conservative early splits through the gorges will feel this climb acutely. The Hautajärvi turnaround cut-off (Saturday 06:00) is the primary time pressure — arriving at 83 km with enough time to make the return in under 38 hours total is the structural challenge around which all pacing must be built.

Pacing & Strategy

Given the out-and-back format and the Saturday 06:00 turnaround cut-off, build your race plan around arriving at Hautajärvi (83 km) with a meaningful buffer — not just a few minutes. The overall cut-off window of roughly 38 hours (finish Sunday 20:00) is generous on paper but shrinks quickly in technical Finnish forest at night. Split the race into three segments: Ruka to Oulanka Visitor Centre (28 km), Oulanka to turnaround (55 km), and the full return (83 km). Resist the temptation to push hard on the relatively easier early kilometres; the gorge sections after Oulanka require patience on both passes. Walk the steep technical climbs and descents rather than running them — the time difference is negligible but the muscular cost of scrambling is significant over 166 km. Plan your crew meetings at the four accessible crew points (Ruka start, Oulanka outbound at 28 km, Hautajärvi at 83 km, Oulanka inbound at 138 km) well in advance, with kit changes, hot food and footwear checks built into each stop.

Fuelling & Hydration

With aid stations at 7 km (Konttainen), 28 km (Oulanka Visitor Centre), 51 km (Juuma), 83 km (Hautajärvi), 115 km (Juuma inbound), 138 km (Oulanka inbound) and 159 km (Konttainen inbound), resupply opportunities are reasonably regular — the longest gap between stops is roughly 32 km (Juuma to Hautajärvi outbound and again inbound). Carry enough food and fluid to cover these stretches comfortably, with a buffer for slower-than-expected sections. In northern Finnish conditions, particularly at night, the urge to eat and drink often diminishes — set a timer-based eating strategy rather than relying on hunger cues. Hot food and drink at crew points will be critical, especially during the night section and in cold or wet conditions. Prioritise savoury, solid foods at the major crew stops (Oulanka, Hautajärvi) to counteract flavour fatigue from gels and bars. Sodium management matters on a race this long; factor in electrolyte supplementation from the outset rather than waiting for cramp signals.

Conditions to Expect

Running from the Ruka / Kuusamo area of northern Finland, the NUTS Karhunkierros 166K takes place in a subarctic boreal environment where conditions can be demanding regardless of the season. Night temperatures can drop sharply, and the fully remote character of much of the route — particularly between Juuma and Hautajärvi — means there is little shelter if weather deteriorates. Rain turns boardwalks and rooted singletrack into genuinely slippery hazards; waterproof and windproof layers are not optional. Given that the race spans at least one full night and likely portions of two nights, runners must carry reliable lighting and be prepared for hours of solo travel in the dark through forest with limited landmarks. Mandatory kit requirements should be treated as a minimum — experienced northern ultrarunners typically carry more. Mosquitoes and other insects can be a factor in warmer conditions, so consider appropriate clothing and repellent as part of your preparation.
