Race guide

Updated 19 July 2026

UTTERtrail / SAUKKOtrail is a 52 km point-to-point trail race threading through the flat, forested landscapes of Pedersöre municipality in Ostrobothnia, Finland. Starting at Vilobacka (Yli-Purmo) and finishing at Lappforsin hiihtomaja (the Lappfors ski lodge), the course follows a route that is almost entirely defined by its pancake-flat terrain — just 56 metres of total ascent across the full distance, with a high point of only 70 metres above sea level. This is not a mountain race; it is a test of sustained running efficiency, mental endurance and the ability to manage effort across a long, unbroken stretch of Nordic trail through forest tracks, bogs and rural paths. The cutoff at the finish is 18:00 on race day, giving runners a firm window to complete the journey.

Course & Terrain

The route runs roughly 52 km from Vilobacka in Yli-Purmo southwest to Lappfors, staying within Pedersöre municipality throughout. With only 56 metres of cumulative elevation gain and a maximum elevation of 70 metres, the terrain is relentlessly flat — characteristic of the low-lying Ostrobothnian coastal region of western Finland. Expect forest tracks, gravel paths and natural trail surfaces through boreal woodland, with sections crossing or skirting boggy ground and open rural landscape. There is no technical scrambling, no sustained climbing and no exposed ridgeline — but the lack of gradient means there is nowhere to hide: running economy and consistent pace are everything. The surface underfoot can be soft and yielding, particularly in wetter conditions, which adds resistance over time.

Key Checkpoint & Midpoint

The only intermediate checkpoint is the Sexsjön / Sääksjärvi aid station at 26 km, the exact halfway point of the course. This is the single opportunity for structured resupply before the finish, so planning your nutrition and hydration strategy around this stop is essential. The finish at Lappforsin hiihtomaja also serves as a crew point, meaning supporters can meet runners at the end but there is no crew access at Sexsjön / Sääksjärvi unless the race organisation specifies otherwise. With just one aid station across 52 km, self-sufficiency between Vilobacka and the midpoint, and again between the midpoint and Lappfors, is a genuine requirement.

Pacing & Fuelling Strategy

Because the course is flat, most runners will be able to sustain a running pace for the majority of the distance — walk breaks are a choice rather than a terrain necessity. Start conservatively: the temptation to bank time early on flat ground is real, but the second 26 km with tired legs on soft forest trail can feel very different. Aim for a steady, even split. Fuelling is straightforward in structure but demanding in execution over 52 km: carry enough calories to run from the start to Sexsjön / Sääksjärvi (26 km) and refuel thoroughly there for the second half. Hydration needs will vary with conditions, but the absence of significant elevation change means sweat rate is driven almost entirely by pace and temperature rather than exertion peaks. Carry at least enough fluid to cover the gap between aid stations comfortably. The 18:00 cutoff at Lappfors gives a clear time target to work back from when planning your pace.

Conditions to Expect

Pedersöre in Ostrobothnia has a continental-influenced climate moderated by its proximity to the Gulf of Bothnia coast. Race-day conditions depend heavily on the time of year, but runners should prepare for the full range of Finnish weather: cool to cold temperatures, wind exposure on open stretches and the real possibility of rain or mud, especially on forest paths. The boggy sections of the course can become particularly soft after wet weather, adding ground resistance and the risk of wet feet early. If the race is held in late summer or autumn, daylight is generally not an issue for most finishers, but the 18:00 cutoff means slower runners will want to keep an eye on ambient light as they approach Lappfors. Lightweight waterproof protection and trail shoes with good grip on muddy, soft surfaces are sensible choices regardless of the forecast.
