Nuuksio Classic Trail Marathon
Solvalla, Espoo
Race guide
Updated 19 July 2026
The Nuuksio Classic Trail Marathon is a 42 km loop starting and finishing at Solvalla in Espoo, threading through the forests and rocky terrain of the Nuuksio area just west of Helsinki. With 731 m of total elevation gain and a high point of just 113 m, this is not a mountain race — it is a technical forest trail event where consistent effort, precise footing and smart fuelling matter far more than raw climbing power. The relatively modest elevation profile makes it accessible to marathon runners crossing over from road, but the rooty, undulating singletrack demands respect and rewards those who have spent time on their feet in Nordic forest conditions.
Course & Terrain
The route departs Solvalla at 82 m elevation and stays low throughout, never exceeding 113 m. The first major landmark is the Högbacka parking checkpoint at 15.3 km, followed by Valklammentie at 24.3 km and Kolmoislammentie at 34 km before returning to Solvalla at 42.2 km. Do not mistake the gentle numbers for easy ground: Finnish forest trail is characterised by exposed bedrock slabs, mossy roots, soft bog sections and tight singletrack through birch and pine. Footing demands constant attention. The terrain rolls continuously rather than presenting single defined climbs, so your legs accumulate fatigue steadily across the whole distance rather than in one defined blow-up point.
The Decisive Sections — Where the Race Is Won or Lost
Because the course lacks a single brutal climb, the race is decided by cumulative effort management across the middle and closing thirds. The stretch from Valklammentie (24.3 km) to Kolmoislammentie (34 km) is the most exposed portion of the second half, arriving when legs are already loaded and the cut-off at Valklammentie (Saturday 15:00) has cleared the field. Runners who have gone out too conservatively on the flat early sections often find real speed here, while those who treated the opening 24 km as a warm-up lap at race effort hit a wall. The final 8 km from Kolmoislammentie back to Solvalla is where the race is either salvaged or cemented — the finish cut-off is 18:00 on Saturday, giving a generous window, but only if you have managed your resources correctly to that point.
Pacing Strategy
Resist the temptation to push hard early just because the terrain feels runnable and flat. The consistent undulation accumulates more stress than a simple elevation profile suggests, and the forest surface burns energy through constant micro-adjustments in balance and stride. A negative split or even effort across the two halves is the smarter play. Crucially, plan to race the back half — not just finish it. The moment you give yourself a concrete target to chase after Valklammentie, your body tends to find a gear that coasting never unlocks. Identify a competitor ahead of you or a time split and commit to hunting it down from 24 km onwards. Running through the closing stages with genuine intent rather than survival mode produces better times and far more satisfaction.
Fuelling & Hydration
This is a cool-climate, low-altitude forest race, not a hot mountain ultra. Your caloric burn rate is meaningful but modest compared with races involving serious vertical or summer heat, and over-fuelling is a genuine trap. If your stomach starts to rebel at any point, the fix is almost always to back off intake rather than push through — your energy reserves are likely still adequate even when you stop eating for a stretch. Take small, consistent amounts at each checkpoint rather than loading up, and match your hydration to actual conditions on the day. The checkpoint spacing — roughly every 9–10 km — is forgiving enough that a simple gel or real food piece between each crew point is sufficient for most runners. Solvalla (start/finish) is the only crew-accessible point, so plan your drop bag and support logistics around that single location.
Conditions to Expect
Nuuksio in the Espoo lakeland sits in southern Finland, and the race environment is defined by the forest canopy, which provides shade but also retains moisture and can make the ground soft and slippery after rain. Rocks and roots become notably treacherous when wet, so trail shoes with genuine grip lugs are essential regardless of the forecast. Temperatures in the Finnish spring or autumn race window can swing from brisk morning starts to warmer midday conditions; dress in layers you can manage on the move. Navigation is generally well-marked, but the dense forest means you need to stay alert to course markings rather than relying on a visible route ahead. Poles are not necessary for terrain of this gradient but some runners find them useful for maintaining rhythm on the longer flat sections.

- The Gut Mutinymedal
More fuel isn't better — scale intake to the conditions; cool and flat burns far less than hot mountains. When my gut rebels mid-race the fix is usually less, not more. My energy can be fine even when I stop eating.
— Kai
- Sixteenth and Seventeenthmedal
I have a late-race gear that switches on the moment I give myself permission to compete, not just complete. Plan to chase — a concrete target in the back half brings out my best; never cruise to the line.
