Saimaa Winter Trail
Saimaa Winter Trail
Imatra
Race guide
Updated 29 June 2026
The Saimaa Winter Trail is a 22 km trail race set in and around Imatra in Finland, starting and finishing at the Ukonniemi Arena. With only 133 m of total elevation gain and a high point of just 107 m, this is emphatically a flat and fast course – but don't be fooled by the numbers. Running in Finnish winter conditions means snow, ice, and temperatures that can turn even gentle terrain into a real test of judgement, footing, and clothing choices. The race offers a single cut-off at the finish line at 22:00 on race day, giving runners plenty of time to complete the distance, but the real challenge here is managing the cold and the surface underfoot rather than the gradient.
Course & Terrain
The 22 km loop departs from Ukonniemi Arena at 103 m elevation and remains largely flat throughout, with the terrain hugging the landscape typical of the Saimaa lake region – forested paths, shoreline tracks, and packed snow or icy trails depending on the winter conditions of the year. The course never climbs higher than 107 m, so there is virtually no sustained ascent to worry about. What defines this route is its character as a winter trail: surfaces can range from groomed tracks to uneven compacted snow, and exposed sections near the lake can be particularly cold or windswept. Expect a mix of narrow forest singletracks and wider paths that allow you to settle into a rhythm.
The Decisive Sections – Where the Race Is Won or Lost
Given the minimal elevation change, the decisive factor in this race is not any particular climb but rather how well you manage your footing and pace on slippery or variable surfaces. The section between the start and the first aid station at approximately km 13 covers more than half the course and is where runners typically find their legs and establish pace. The stretch from km 13 to the second aid station at km 21 – covering 8 km at a gentle average elevation around 78–102 m – is where fatigue and cold start to combine. With only 1 km remaining after the second aid station, that final segment back to Ukonniemi Arena is short but can feel long if you have underestimated the cold drain on your body. Stay controlled through the middle section and don't overcook the first half.
Pacing & Fuelling Strategy
With two aid stations at km 13 and km 21, the fuelling windows are reasonably spaced for a 22 km effort. Most runners in reasonable winter trail shape will complete this in 2–3.5 hours, so treat your nutrition accordingly: carry enough food and fluid to cover the 13 km gap to the first station without relying on it, especially since cold reduces both thirst sensation and appetite. At km 13, take on warm fluids if available and eat something solid to sustain the back half. The km 21 aid station is essentially a final checkpoint – grab what you need and push through to the finish 1 km away. Insulated soft flasks or a hydration bladder with an insulated tube are advisable to prevent freezing. Run conservatively in the opening kilometres while your body adjusts to the cold and the footing underfoot.
Conditions to Expect
Saimaa in winter means genuine Finnish cold. Temperatures can be well below freezing on race day, and wind chill near open water sections will intensify this. Snow underfoot is the norm, ranging from soft and grippy to compacted and icy depending on recent weather and temperature fluctuations. Microspikes or trail shoes with aggressive lugs are strongly advisable; check pre-race communications for the organisers' recommendations on footwear. Daylight hours are limited in a Finnish winter, so even for a daytime race the light can be low and flat, making it harder to read the trail surface. Dress in moisture-wicking base layers, an insulating mid-layer, and a wind-resistant outer shell. Protect your extremities – gloves, buff, and a hat are not optional extras here, they are race essentials. Factor in the physiological cost of staying warm when setting your effort level.
