NUTS Pyhä 21 km
Pyhätunturi (Pyhä)
Race guide
Updated 28 July 2026
NUTS Pyhä 21 km is a fell loop in Pyhä-Luosto National Park. The measured course is 22.1 km with 713 m of climbing, a high point of 473 m and a low of 197 m. It crosses Noitatunturi, Peurakero and Laakakero and finishes over the Kultakero summit above the resort. The start is at 10:00 on Saturday. The race is partially self-supported: outside assistance is permitted only at the official aid stations.
The course
The terrain at Pyhä is the whole story: rocky fell summits, boulder fields, gorge staircases and boardwalk across bog between them. 713 m of climbing over 22 km is a demanding ratio, and the ascents are short but steep. The summits follow one another — Noitatunturi, Peurakero, Laakakero and finally Kultakero — with no long recovery sections in between. This is not a course where the pace stays even.
Where the race is decided
In the boulder fields. The rock on the summits is slow and demands constant concentration, and in rain it becomes genuinely slippery. Most runners lose more time on the descents than on the climbs. The closing Kultakero ascent arrives with roughly 600 m of climbing already done, so something should be kept back for it.
Pacing and fuelling
There are two official aid stations: Karhunjuomalampi at around 5 km and the Huttuloma wilderness hut. Because the race is partially self-supported, food and drink between them are carried by the runner. In practice that means filling flasks at every station and carrying food for the whole race — the aid stations cannot be the backbone of the fuelling plan.
Cut-off and weather
The finish closes at 17:30 on Saturday, giving a 10:00 starter seven and a half hours. That is a generous allowance for 22 km, but fell terrain is slower than forest trail and the time should be budgeted more conservatively than the distance suggests. Early August in southern Lapland is typically 10–20 °C, but wind and rain arrive quickly on the exposed summits, and wet rock is the single biggest risk on this course.
