Race guide

Updated 29 June 2026

Ecotrail Stockholm 80K is a point-to-loop trail race that starts and finishes at the Stora Skuggan Amphitheatre in Norra Djurgården, Stockholm. Covering 80 km with 1,699 m of total elevation gain, it is a deceptively demanding race: the high point reaches only 108 m above sea level, yet the relentless rolling terrain of the Stockholm archipelago region accumulates nearly 1,700 metres of climbing across the full distance. The course winds through urban green corridors, forest trails, and coastal paths — a unique urban ultra that showcases Stockholm's natural landscape without ever straying far from the city. Eight aid stations punctuate the route, and a Saturday 21:00 finish cut-off at Stora Skuggan gives runners a firm deadline to work towards.

Course & Terrain

The 80K route is built almost entirely on natural trail surfaces — packed dirt singletracks, rooted forest paths, and occasional boardwalks through wetter lowland sections. Because Stockholm sits at sea level, the elevation profile is characterised not by a handful of big mountain climbs but by continuous, short, punchy ascents and descents spread across the entire 80 km. The high point of 108 m is modest, but you will be climbing and descending throughout, which accumulates to 1,699 m D+ by the finish. Norra Djurgården's mixed forest provides good shade in summer conditions, but trail surfaces can be technical in sections — expect exposed tree roots and narrow singletrack that demand focus even in the later kilometres. Footing is generally good in dry conditions but can become slippery after rain, particularly on the steeper rooted sections.

Decisive Sections — Where the Race Is Won or Lost

Because the climbs are short and punchy rather than sustained mountain ascents, the decisive factor on this course is consistency and management of effort across the full 80 km. The stretch between Aid Station 4 (49 km) and Aid Station 6 (61 km) is particularly important: you cover 12 km with the highest point on the back half of the course at 80 m, and Aid Station 5 at 58 km offers drinks only, meaning you have a relatively thin support window through a technically demanding section. If you have gone out too hard in the first half through the flowing trails to Aid Station 2 (25 km) and Aid Station 3 (40 km), the fatigue will compound here. The final 8 km from Aid Station 7 (72 km) back to the Stora Skuggan Amphitheatre offers one last aid point at 76 km (drinks only), and with the finish nearly at sea level, the closing kilometres should be runnable — but only if you have managed your legs across the preceding 70 km.

Pacing & Fuelling Strategy

With a Saturday 21:00 cut-off at the finish, most competitive runners will be targeting a finishing window well inside that, but it serves as a useful backstop for those facing a tough day. The aid station spacing is uneven — a long 16 km gap from the start to Aid Station 2 at 25 km, with only a water-only stop at 9 km — so carry enough calories to sustain yourself through that opening stretch. Aid Stations 2, 4, 6, and 7 are the full snacks-and-drinks stops and double as crew access points; if you are using crew support, structure your kit drops around these four points. Aid Stations 1, 5, and 8 are minimal (water or drinks only), so do not rely on them for calories. Given the rolling, repetitive nature of the terrain, aim for even effort rather than even pace — power-hike the short climbs in the second half to protect your quads for the runnable sections that follow.

Conditions to Expect

Ecotrail Stockholm takes place in the Stockholm summer, which typically means long daylight hours — a significant advantage on an 80 km race with a Saturday finish cut-off. Temperatures are generally mild to warm, but Scandinavian weather can shift quickly; a lightweight wind or rain layer is worth carrying. The forest trails of Norra Djurgården provide shade through much of the course, which helps in warm conditions, but exposed coastal or open sections can feel significantly warmer. Humidity can be high in a Swedish summer. Ensure you are well hydrated before the start, and do not underestimate fluid requirements between the sparser aid stations, particularly on a warm day. Trails can be muddy and slippery after rain, so trail shoes with solid grip are strongly recommended over road-biased footwear.
