The North Shore is the 22 km distance at Kullamannen by UTMB, a fast, low-lying coastal route on Sweden's Bjare peninsula that runs from the Hotel Skansen Seaside to the Bastad Race Center. With just 97 m of climbing and a high point of only 27 m, it is the gentlest way into the Kullamannen weekend and an ideal target for newer trail runners or anyone wanting a quick, scenic race that still carries the UTMB name. What defines the North Shore is its simplicity: a single support point at the halfway mark, a generous cut-off, and almost no vertical to manage. It rewards steady running rather than climbing or technical descending, and its short length and coastal setting make it as much an accessible introduction to the event as a serious competitive effort.

The course and terrain

The North Shore covers 22 km from Hotel Skansen Seaside (7 m) to Bastad Race Center (14 m), passing a single checkpoint at The Camping at 11 km (13 m). The whole route sits within a narrow band a few metres above sea level, with a high point of just 27 m, so the profile is effectively flat from start to finish. The 97 m of total climbing is spread so thinly that no single rise stands out as a defining obstacle. This is coastal, low-elevation terrain along the northern edge of the Bjare peninsula. Without the technical climbs and descents that shape the longer Kullamannen distances, the North Shore stays runnable throughout, and the challenge is one of maintaining pace on easy ground rather than negotiating difficult trail. The near-halfway point at The Camping neatly divides the route into two similar 11 km segments.

Where the race is decided

On a course with only 97 m of climb and no high ground, the North Shore is decided by turnover and consistency rather than by any climb or descent. There is no single defining feature to attack; instead, the race comes down to how evenly you can run the two 11 km halves either side of the checkpoint at The Camping. The most likely place to lose time is the second half, from 11 km to the finish at Bastad Race Center. Flat courses give tired legs no relief, so a runner who starts too aggressively on the fast opening ground can fade over the closing kilometres even without any hill to blame. Holding an even, sustainable effort through the first half sets up a strong run into the finish.

How to pace and fuel it

There is one support point on the North Shore, at The Camping at 11 km, splitting the route into an opening 11 km leg and a closing 11 km leg to the finish. That spacing is short enough that a single soft flask or handheld will comfortably cover each segment, but you should still carry your own fluids and a gel or two rather than relying solely on the halfway station, especially in warm conditions. Because the terrain is flat and fast, the temptation is to run the first half too hard. Set a pace you can genuinely sustain for the full 22 km and use the checkpoint at The Camping to top up rather than to recover. The overall cut-off at Bastad Race Center is Saturday 14:00, which is generous for a distance this short and low, so all but the newest runners will have ample margin; the priority is pacing for a strong finish rather than racing the clock.

Conditions to expect

This is a Swedish coastal event, and the North Shore's position right on the shoreline of the Bjare peninsula means exposure to sea wind can be the biggest variable on the day. There is no altitude and no long technical descent to worry about, so the demands stay firmly on flat-ground running and sensible pacing rather than mountain skills. As the shortest and easiest distance in the Kullamannen line-up, the North Shore is a welcoming entry point to the event and to trail running under the UTMB banner. Come ready for whatever the coast throws at you, keep your effort even across the two halves, and enjoy a quick, scenic run into the Bastad Race Center finish.
