Arctic Trail Run
Arctic Trail Run 20 km (Seku Vain)
Saariselkä
Race guide
Updated 19 July 2026
The Arctic Trail Run 20 km — known locally as Seku Vain — is a 19 km trail race set entirely within the Saariselkä fell wilderness of Finnish Lapland. Starting and finishing at an elevation of 300 m, the route pushes up to a high point of 449 m, accumulating 419 m of total ascent across open tundra, rocky fell terrain, and arctic forest tracks. It is the shorter distance option within the Arctic Trail Run event, but do not mistake brevity for ease: the remote, exposed landscape above the Arctic Circle demands solid trail running experience and respect for the conditions.
Course & Terrain
The race begins at Lutto, Santa's Hotel Tunturi, and follows a point-to-point route finishing in Saariselkä — both at 300 m elevation. The course climbs steadily to a high point of 449 m, meaning runners gain and then lose roughly 150 m of net elevation across terrain that is characteristically Lappish: open fell tops with low-lying scrub, exposed rocky paths, and stretches of boreal forest. The ground underfoot can vary dramatically — packed dirt gives way to rooty woodland trails, boggy sections of moorland, and loose stone on the fell ridges. There is only one intermediate service point, located at the 14 km mark near the high point of 421 m, so runners cover the first 14 km entirely self-sufficient from the start.
Decisive Climbs & Where the Race Is Won
With 419 m of total ascent compressed into 19 km, the climbing is sustained rather than savage, but the ascent from the start up towards the 421 m service point at 14 km is the race's defining effort. This gradual but relentless gain across open fell terrain will separate runners who go out too hard from those who manage effort intelligently. The descent from the high point back down to Saariselkä at 300 m in the final 5 km offers a chance to push the pace, but fell descents on potentially wet or rocky ground require sure footing — arriving at the service point with fresh legs is key to making that final stretch count.
Pacing & Fuelling
With only one service point at 14 km, you must carry enough fluid and calories to cover the opening two-thirds of the race independently. Plan to arrive at the 14 km service point with something left in the tank, not running on empty. For most trail runners this race sits in the 1.5 to 3 hour range, so a single soft flask plus a small snack reserve is the minimum sensible setup. Crew access is available at the start (Lutto, Santa's Hotel Tunturi) and at the finish in Saariselkä, but not at the mid-race service point, so drop bags or crew support cannot supplement you mid-course. Pace the climb conservatively — the open fell offers little shelter, and any wind will make sustained effort harder than the numbers alone suggest.
Conditions to Expect
Saariselkä sits above the Arctic Circle in Finnish Lapland, and the weather here can shift quickly regardless of the calendar date. Expect cool to cold temperatures, with wind chill on the exposed fell tops amplifying the perceived cold significantly. Even in summer conditions, a lightweight wind and waterproof shell is strongly advisable. The terrain holds moisture well, meaning boggy patches and wet rock are common; waterproof trail shoes or well-draining shoes with aggressive grip are far preferable to road-biased trainers. If the race is held in shoulder seasons, there is a realistic possibility of snow patches on the higher ground, making navigation and footing more demanding. Always check the race briefing for current local conditions.
