Ultra-Trail Mount Yun by UTMB® – UMY 100M
Xiangning Mingzhu Square → Zhonghe Square
Race guide
Updated 18 July 2026
The UMY 100M is the flagship 100-mile race at Ultra-Trail Mount Yun by UTMB, running 161 km from Xiangning Mingzhu Square to Zhonghe Square. Its defining figure is not the distance but the climbing: 12,658 m of positive ascent, an enormous amount of vertical for the distance and the number that shapes every decision you make on this course. Despite a high point of only 1,644 m, the UMY is savagely repetitive rather than high-altitude. The route saws up and down between valley villages and mid-mountain ridgelines more than a dozen times, never staying high for long but never letting you rest either. This is a race for runners with deep durability, patient pacing and strong descending legs, where the challenge is accumulated vertical over a day and a half rather than any single mountain.
The course: 161 km of relentless up and down
The UMY 100M covers 161 km from Xiangning Mingzhu Square (995 m) to the finish at Zhonghe Square (661 m), with 12,658 m of climbing along the way. That is roughly 79 m of ascent per kilometre sustained across a full 100 miles, a punishing figure that comes not from big single climbs but from constant, repeated ridges and valleys. The high point is just 1,644 m, so this is emphatically not an altitude race; it is a race of accumulation. The checkpoint sequence maps a route that never settles. From Xiangning Mingzhu Square the course climbs through Yangjiayuan Village (1,141 m at 10.3 km), Xigeduo Village (1,483 m) and up to Xujiaping Village (1,541 m at 30.2 km), then drops to Qiandaping Village (970 m) before climbing again to Sita Village (1,201 m). It continues to swing through Zisha Pottery Town (67.1 km, crew point), Chateau Rongzi (1,296 m), Xiangning Sports Center (993 m, crew point), Qiaoshang New Village (1,551 m), Xizhuang (1,463 m), Anfen (125.9 km, crew point), Jiazhuang (1,312 m) and Xiachuan Village Committee (1,010 m) before the closing drop through Luyuangou Village (722 m) to Zhonghe Square. Every named high point is followed by a valley, and every valley by another climb.
Where the race is won and lost
With no single dominant mountain, the UMY is decided by how well you manage the cumulative climbing and the long night sections between crew points. The first structural test is reaching Xujiaping Village at 30.2 km (1,541 m) before the Sat 02:00 cut-off, which means the opening third is run largely in darkness with more than 1,500 m already climbed. Getting there with legs and lights in good order sets up the rest of the day. The crew points at Zisha Pottery Town (67.1 km), Xiangning Sports Center (92.5 km) and Anfen (125.9 km) break the race into manageable blocks and are where the event is genuinely won or lost. The stretch from Xiangning Sports Center through Qiaoshang New Village (1,551 m) and Xizhuang (1,463 m) to Anfen packs some of the highest repeated climbing on the course into the second night, when fatigue is deepest. Runners who arrive at Anfen with something left, then grind through Jiazhuang (1,312 m) and Xiachuan Village Committee (1,010 m), earn the long runnable descent to the finish. Those who overspend earlier tend to unravel on exactly these mid-race re-climbs.
Pacing and fuelling around the cut-offs
The published cut-offs give the shape of the timetable: Xujiaping Village at 30.2 km (Sat 02:00), Zisha Pottery Town at 67.1 km (Sat 13:00), Xiangning Sports Center at 92.5 km (Sat 18:00), Anfen at 125.9 km (Sun 02:30), Xiachuan Village Committee at 146.6 km (Sun 09:00) and the finish at Zhonghe Square (Sun 15:00). The gaps between them are long, both in distance and in climbing, so treat each crew point as a genuine reset: refuel properly, manage feet, and restock for the block ahead rather than the next few kilometres. Over 12,658 m of climbing across a day and a half, fuelling discipline is the difference between finishing and timing out. Aim to eat consistently from the first climb and do not let the runnable valley sections tempt you into a pace your stomach cannot support later. The two overnight sections are the highest-risk windows for both energy and morale, so plan warm layers and caffeine strategy around them. Because the descents are frequent and long, guard your quads early; the closing drop from Xiachuan Village Committee through Luyuangou Village to Zhonghe Square is only a gift if your legs can still absorb downhill after 145 km.
Terrain and conditions to expect
The UMY lives in a band roughly between 660 m and 1,644 m, cycling through mid-mountain ridgelines and the villages of the Mount Yun and Xiangning area. Because you are never far above 1,600 m, altitude itself is not the enemy; the terrain is. Expect steep, repeated climbs and descents on trails that link named villages and landmarks such as Zisha Pottery Town, Chateau Rongzi and Xiachuan Village Committee, with the character of the ground shifting each time you drop into a valley and climb back out. With roughly a day and a half on course, you will run through two nights, and the low-lying valley checkpoints can feel markedly cooler after dark than the exposed daytime ridges. Prepare for a wide temperature range and for extended time moving in the dark between crew points. Poles, if allowed, are strongly worth their weight on a course with this climb density, and specific downhill conditioning beforehand pays off across the countless descents. Above all, plan for the accumulation: the UMY does not overwhelm you with one mountain, it wears you down with a hundred of them.
