Torrencial Chile by UTMB – LLANCAHUE 44K
Collico
Race guide
Updated 19 July 2026
The LLANCAHUE 44K is the middle distance at Torrencial Chile by UTMB, a 44 km route out of Collico with 1256 m of climbing and a high point of just 460 m. Like its shorter sibling it is a low-altitude race, starting near sea level and drawing its difficulty from repeated climbing between a string of checkpoints rather than from any single big mountain. The course climbs early to a rolling high section, works across it through several aid points with cut-offs, then descends the whole way back to the finish near where it began. It is a genuine ultra-distance test on the Torrencial trails, well suited to runners ready to step up from the 21K but not yet taking on the longest event.
The course and terrain
From a start at just 13 m, the route climbs steadily to Collico 1 at 9.1 km and 322 m, then continues up to El Carbon at 16.2 km (434 m). The middle of the race stays high and rolling: Lomas Del Sol at 28.9 km sits at 452 m, close to the 460 m high point, so the long central stretch undulates across the upper ground rather than settling on a single summit. From Lomas Del Sol the course turns for home, dropping back to Collico 2 at 35.6 km (320 m) and then descending the final 8 km to the finish at 43.6 km and 23 m. With 1256 m of total climb spread across a route that only reaches 460 m, the vertical comes in repeated rises and falls between checkpoints, so expect a rhythm of short climbs and drops rather than long uniform gradients.
Where the race is won and lost
The heart of this race is the rolling high section between El Carbon (16.2 km, 434 m) and Lomas Del Sol (28.9 km, 452 m). It looks flat on the elevation summary because the checkpoints sit at similar heights, but the 1256 m of total climbing tells the real story: this middle stretch keeps adding up small ascents, and it is where runners who went out too hard on the first climb begin to unravel. The closing sequence then decides the finish. From Lomas Del Sol the trail drops to Collico 2 (320 m) and on down to the finish at 23 m, a long descent of roughly 20 km of net downhill from the high point. Fresh legs make that descent fast and free; tired quads make it a grind. Managing the rolling middle so you reach the descents with something left is the key to a strong result.
How to pace and fuel it
Four cut-offs shape the day: El Carbon at 16.2 km by Sat 11:20, Lomas Del Sol at 28.9 km by Sat 14:15, Collico 2 at 35.6 km by Sat 15:30, and the finish at Sat 17:00. The gaps tighten through the middle of the race, so reaching El Carbon and Lomas Del Sol with margin is the priority; fall behind on the rolling high section and the later cut-offs come quickly. Use the aid at Collico 1, El Carbon, Lomas Del Sol and Collico 2 to stay on top of fluids and calories, and carry enough water to bridge the climbs between them. Because the toughest cumulative climbing sits in the middle and the long descent comes late, fuel consistently through the first half so you arrive at Collico 2 with the energy to run the final drop to the finish rather than survive it.
Conditions to expect
This is a low-elevation route from start to finish, ranging between roughly 13 m and 460 m, so there is no altitude to contend with; the challenge is the accumulated climbing and the distance. With the cut-offs running from late morning through the Saturday afternoon, the exposed high section and the long final descent are likely to fall in the warmer hours, so build your hydration plan around midday conditions on the upper ground. Tactically, the course rewards even effort. Climb the early section to El Carbon under control, hold a steady rhythm across the rolling middle to Lomas Del Sol, and save your legs for the descent through Collico 2 to the line. Runners who respect the deceptively demanding 1256 m of total climb early are the ones still running well when the long downhill opens up.
