The Pikes Peak Marathon is one of the most iconic and brutally demanding mountain races in North America. Starting at Manitou Springs City Hall at 1,925 m, the course climbs 2,381 m of vertical gain up Barr Trail to the summit of Pikes Peak at 4,279 m before turning around and retracing every step back to the finish — 42.2 km total with no flat miles to recover on. What makes this race genuinely different from a road marathon is not just the distance but the altitude: you spend the final miles of the ascent and the opening miles of the descent above 4,000 m, where thin air taxes even well-acclimatized runners. First held in 1956, this is a race that defines a certain type of mountain runner — disciplined, altitude-savvy, and willing to suffer on steep, technical trail.

Course & Terrain

The entire race is run on Barr Trail, a rocky, non-technical singletrack that winds through pine forest, above treeline tundra, and over loose talus near the summit. From Manitou Springs City Hall the trail climbs steadily through town before entering the trees, passing No Name Creek at 7.2 km (2,709 m) and arriving at Barr Camp at 12.2 km (3,102 m). Above Barr Camp the forest thins and the trail steepens considerably as you approach the A-Frame shelter at 16.4 km (3,653 m), which marks the beginning of the most exposed and altitude-affected section. The final 5 km to the summit are above treeline, rocky, and often scoured by wind. The descent reverses exactly this route, so the lower forest miles — which feel gentle on the way up — become the jarring, quad-burning final kilometres when your legs are already cooked.

The Decisive Climbs and Where the Race Is Won or Lost

The race has two crux sections. The first is the climb from A-Frame (3,653 m) to the summit (4,243 m) — roughly 5 km of exposed ridge where altitude sickness, wind, and fatigue combine to unravel undertrained or over-eager runners. The cut-off at the summit is 13:30, meaning you must leave Manitou Springs no later than an aggressive early-morning start to bank enough time. The second crux is the descent from the summit back through A-Frame and down to Barr Camp: steep, loose in places, and relentless on the quads. Runners who bomb the descent too aggressively pay the price badly in the lower forest miles. Conversely, runners who over-conserve on the descent risk missing the final cut-off of 17:00 at the finish. The A-Frame checkpoint on the way up (cut-off 11:45) and the summit cut-off (13:30) are your two hard time checks — if you are arriving at A-Frame with less than 30 minutes to spare, your day is very likely over.

Pacing Strategy

Treat the ascent as a controlled effort, not a race — you cannot make up time lost to altitude sickness or blowing up above treeline. A useful benchmark: reaching Barr Camp (12.2 km, cut-off 10:30) with at least 45–60 minutes in hand gives you a workable buffer for the harder climbing above. Power-hike every steep pitch from A-Frame upward; running at 3,600 m+ with no prior acclimatization will cost you far more time in the final kilometres than the few seconds per mile you gain. On the descent, run the technical upper sections conservatively and open up the stride once you are back below treeline in the forest. Budget your effort so you can still move through the No Name Creek checkpoint at 35.6 km (2,629 m) with enough time to comfortably cover the final 6.6 km to the finish before the 17:00 cut-off.

Fueling & Hydration

With 42.2 km and over 4,700 m of combined up-and-down movement, caloric demand is high — plan for 250–300 calories per hour minimum. The manned crew points at the start and finish (Manitou Springs City Hall) are your only guaranteed crew access, so you must be self-sufficient on the mountain. Carry enough food and fluid for the full ascent to the summit and back to Barr Camp at minimum. Altitude suppresses appetite, so practice eating at elevation before race day and choose foods you know work when you feel nauseous. Hydration needs are surprisingly high in Colorado's dry mountain air even on cool days; aim for 500–600 ml per hour and consider electrolytes, especially on hot-weather editions. There are natural water sources along Barr Trail, but carry a filter or purification tabs as a contingency rather than relying on them.

Conditions to Expect

Pikes Peak Marathon is held in late August, but the summit environment is genuinely alpine regardless of the calendar date. At 4,243 m, temperatures can drop below freezing with wind chill even on a warm summer day, and afternoon thunderstorms are a serious and regular hazard — the exposed ridge above treeline is exactly where you do not want to be when lightning rolls in. Mandatory gear typically includes a wind/rain layer and emergency insulation; carry them even if the morning looks clear. Race-day temperatures in Manitou Springs (1,925 m) can be warm — 20°C or more — while the summit may simultaneously be single digits with gale-force wind. Plan your kit for the summit, not the start line. Snow on the upper trail in August is uncommon but not unheard of. Acclimatization is not optional: spend at least 2–3 days at altitude above 2,500 m before the race if your training base is at sea level.
