Patagonia BARILOCHE by UTMB – BELLA VISTA 55K
Los Baqueanos → Centro Cívico
Race guide
Updated 18 July 2026
The Bella Vista 55K is a mountain ultra at Patagonia Bariloche by UTMB, a 58 km point-to-point that runs from Los Baqueanos to a finish at the Centro Cívico in the heart of Bariloche. With 2814 m of climb and a high point of 1939 m, it takes you through the classic Andean-Patagonian terrain of the region before dropping you into the city on the shore of Nahuel Huapi. Starting at 814 m and finishing at 795 m, the course is not about net elevation but about the big lumps in between, culminating in a late high climb that tops out near 1939 m before the run into town. Four intermediate cut-offs at Chitaka, El Chucaro, Trypay Antú and the Centro Cívico finish (Thu 19:30) give the day a clear structure, making this a race that rewards runners who stay ahead of the clock through the middle before the decisive final climb.
The course and terrain
The Bella Vista 55K runs 58 km from Los Baqueanos (814 m) to the Centro Cívico in Bariloche (795 m), climbing a total of 2814 m to a high point of 1939 m. The early and middle sections stay relatively moderate in altitude: Chitaka at 17.2 km (820 m), Peuma Hue at 23.2 km (823 m), and El Chucaro at 36.2 km (1058 m) sit in a band between roughly 800 and 1060 m, so the first two-thirds roll through Patagonian valley and lakeside terrain rather than climbing continuously. The profile changes sharply in the final third. From Trypay Antú at 43.3 km (808 m), the course climbs to Piedras Blancas at 52 km (1195 m) and reaches its 1939 m high point before dropping to the Centro Cívico at 57.1 km (795 m). That late surge from around 800 m to nearly 1939 m and back down to the city is the defining feature of the route: a big climb and a steep, technical descent stacked into the last 15 km when the legs are already deep into the day.
Where the race is decided
The Bella Vista 55K is decided in its final quarter. After a middle section that keeps you in a fairly narrow altitude band up to El Chucaro (36.2 km, 1058 m) and Trypay Antú (43.3 km, 808 m), the course throws its hardest climbing at you late, hauling from roughly 800 m at Trypay Antú up past Piedras Blancas (52 km, 1195 m) to the 1939 m high point. This is more than 1100 m of gain concentrated into the closing kilometres, exactly where fatigue bites hardest. Runners who spend too much on the rolling early and middle terrain will find that climb toward 1939 m brutal, and the subsequent plunge to the Centro Cívico at 795 m equally punishing on tired quads. The smart race is to arrive at Trypay Antú with legs in reserve and treat the push to Piedras Blancas and the high point as the crux of the day. Manage it well and the descent into Bariloche is a triumphant finish; misjudge it and the last climb becomes a long, cold slog against the Thu 19:30 cut-off.
How to pace and fuel it
Four cut-offs shape the Bella Vista 55K: Chitaka at 17.2 km (Thu 10:00), El Chucaro at 36.2 km (Thu 13:50), Trypay Antú at 43.3 km (Thu 16:00), and the Centro Cívico finish at 57.1 km (Thu 19:30). The gaps between them are generous early and tighten toward the end, so use the flatter, moderate-altitude middle section from Chitaka through Peuma Hue (23.2 km) to El Chucaro to bank time before the closing climb, without emptying the tank. The longest committing stretch for fuelling is the final climb: from Trypay Antú at 43.3 km, you face the haul over Piedras Blancas (52 km) to the 1939 m high point and down to the finish, so leave Trypay Antú fully topped up on fluid and calories. Eat consistently through the moderate middle so you reach the last climb with glycogen in the bank, because appetite fades on a steep ascent late in a race. In cool Patagonian mountain air the calorie demand of sustained climbing is high, so keep taking food even when the effort makes it unappealing.
Conditions to expect
This is a Patagonian mountain race, and the conditions reflect it. Running from Los Baqueanos to the Centro Cívico on the shore of the Bariloche lakes, the course spans lakeside valley trail and high mountain terrain up to 1939 m, where weather can shift quickly. Even with a start and finish around 800 m, the exposed high point near 1939 m can be markedly colder and windier than the valleys, and Patagonia is well known for fast-changing, unpredictable mountain weather. With a Thu 19:30 finish cut-off, slower runners should be prepared for cooling temperatures and the possibility of finishing in fading light, so carry layers and be ready for wind and rain on the high section regardless of how mild the start feels. The terrain rewards confident, technical descending for the drop from the 1939 m high point into the city. Pack for the mountains rather than the lakeshore, respect the exposure on the late climb, and the Bella Vista 55K delivers a genuine Andean-Patagonian day finishing in the centre of Bariloche.
