Oh Meu Deus by UTMB – Oh Meu Deus 20K
São Romão → Seia
Race guide
Updated 19 July 2026
The Oh Meu Deus 20K is the shortest distance at Oh Meu Deus by UTMB, a 22 km loop linked to Seia in Portugal's Serra da Estrela. Do not let the distance fool you: with 892 m of positive climbing and a high point of 881 m, it delivers roughly 40 m of climbing per kilometre, which makes it a punchy, genuinely hilly trail rather than an easy introduction. Starting at 609 m and finishing at Seia at 507 m, the course drops early, climbs back through mountain villages and returns to town, all with a single cut-off at Sun 14:00. It is the accessible entry into the Serra da Estrela weekend, but it still asks for climbing legs and careful footing on the range's rocky trails.
The course and terrain
The route runs from a start at 609 m down to Vila Cova a Coelheira at 5.5 km (350 m), then climbs to Lapa dos Dinheiros at 12.6 km (707 m) before returning to finish at Seia at 507 m. That early descent to 350 m means the first stretch is largely downhill, and the bulk of the day's 892 m of climbing is loaded into the middle - the roughly 7 km pull from Vila Cova up toward Lapa dos Dinheiros and the high point of 881 m. This is classic Serra da Estrela ground: stony, village-linking mountain paths with real gradient changes rather than smooth runnable track. Because only three checkpoints define the loop, the profile is best read as one big descent, one sustained climb, and a rolling return to Seia. Expect the surface to be technical enough that tired or careless footing costs time, even over a short distance.
Where the effort concentrates
The decisive part of this short course is the climb out of Vila Cova a Coelheira. Vila Cova sits at 350 m at 5.5 km; Lapa dos Dinheiros sits at 707 m at 12.6 km, and the high point of 881 m falls in that band - so you gain the day's serious vertical in a single mid-race push after an easy, fast opening. Runners who charge the early descent risk arriving at the base of the climb with legs already jarred. Lapa dos Dinheiros at 12.6 km is the crew point and the natural place to top up before the run home. From there it is roughly 9 km back to Seia at 507 m, a net descent that rewards anyone who climbed within themselves. The smart race is to hold back on the opening downhill, commit to a steady effort on the Vila Cova climb, and then run the final descent with legs that still have something left.
How to pace and fuel it
The aid spacing is short - 5.5 km to Vila Cova, then about 7 km to Lapa dos Dinheiros, then roughly 9 km home - so a single flask or small pack of fluid plus a couple of gels or bars is enough for most runners. The one leg to plan for is the climb between Vila Cova and Lapa dos Dinheiros, where you will do the hardest work; carry enough to keep drinking and take a gel before the gradient bites. With just one cut-off at Seia 14:00, the pressure is on finishing time rather than a chain of intermediate gates, so pace by feel and terrain. The best strategy is negative-split friendly: keep the early descent controlled, spend your energy on the mid-race climb, then use Lapa dos Dinheiros as a quick fuel-and-go before running the closing descent to Seia. Because the whole thing is over in a few hours, focus on steady effort and clean foot placement rather than elaborate nutrition.
Conditions to expect
As the introductory distance in the Serra da Estrela, the 20K still runs on high, rocky mountain trail, so conditions can be more demanding than the length suggests. The high point of 881 m is modest by the range's standards but still exposed, and mountain weather can shift quickly - carry a light layer in case the top of the loop is windy or cool, even if the valleys are warm. The footing is the main technical challenge: granite and stone underfoot on the village-linking paths, with descents that reward attentive running. Because the course starts high, drops to 350 m, and climbs back, you will move through a range of microclimates in a short outing. Check the required kit for the event, keep a headtorch handy if your wave finishes late against the 14:00 cut-off, and treat the descents with the same respect you would on a longer mountain race.
