Race guide

Updated 29 June 2026

The MIUT Discover (56K) is the mid-distance option within the Madeira Island Ultra Trail, a race series celebrated for its raw volcanic terrain, dense laurisilva forest, and relentless vertical. Starting in Boaventura, São Vicente on Madeira's rugged north coast at just 266 m elevation, the course climbs deep into the island's mountainous interior — topping out at 1847 m — before descending all the way to Forum Machico on the east coast at near sea level (7 m). Those 56 km and 2672 m of positive elevation gain make this a genuinely demanding mountain race, not a gentle introduction to trail running. It is, however, a spectacular point-to-point traversal of one of the Atlantic's most dramatic landscapes.

Course & Terrain

The MIUT Discover is a true point-to-point, dropping you at Boaventura on the north coast and finishing at Forum Machico on the east coast — two communities with essentially nothing in common except that Madeira's mountain spine lies between them. Expect technical single-track levada paths, rooty forest trails through ancient laurisilva (a UNESCO World Heritage laurel forest), exposed ridge traversals, and steep cobbled village lanes. The volcanic basalt underfoot is unforgiving: loose and slippery when wet, hard on the quads on descents. The high point of 1847 m means you will spend meaningful time above the treeline on open, windswept ridgeline terrain before the long technical descent to Machico.

The Decisive Climbs & Descents

With 2672 m of climbing packed into 56 km, there is no flat section to recover on. The major ascent carries you from the north coast start up into the island's central massif, gaining well over 1500 m to reach the high point of 1847 m — a long, sustained effort that will define how the rest of your race goes. The descent to Machico is equally consequential: long, steep, and technical, it punishes anyone who climbed too hard or neglected quad-strength training. This is where places are won and lost in the back half of the race. Respect both the climb and the descent equally in your preparation — overly aggressive uphills are repaid with destroyed legs on the way down to Machico.

Pacing & Fueling Strategy

With a cut-off at Forum Machico of Sunday 00:00, runners should plan their pacing around the available time window and the single finish-line checkpoint listed. Because there is only one confirmed crew point (the finish at Forum Machico), you must be entirely self-sufficient for nutrition and hydration between the start in Boaventura and the finish. Carry enough food for the full effort — estimate your finish time conservatively given the climbing. Fuel early and consistently on the big ascent; the ridge section at altitude suppresses appetite but caloric demand remains high. Hydration discipline is critical given Madeira's humidity and the physical demands of 2672 m D+. Practice eating while moving uphill in training if you haven't already.

Conditions to Expect

Madeira's north coast and central mountains are dramatically wetter and cloudier than the south, which is directly relevant to the MIUT Discover start in Boaventura. Expect the possibility of low cloud, mist, and rain in the laurisilva forest sections and on the high ridge, even if Machico on the east coast is sunny at the finish. Temperatures drop significantly at the 1847 m high point — a wind layer and light waterproof are not optional. Trail surfaces become treacherous when wet; gaiters are useful to keep mud and debris out of shoes. The race takes place in spring, when Madeira's mountains can deliver everything from warm sunshine to cold Atlantic squalls within the same hour. Prepare for all of it.

Kit & Race-Day Essentials

The point-to-point format from Boaventura to Machico means there is no return to your start-line bag mid-race, so pack thoughtfully. Given the 1847 m high point and the potential for rapid weather changes on Madeira's north-facing ridges, mandatory kit requirements around waterproof jacket, emergency blanket, and headtorch should be taken seriously rather than treated as bureaucratic minimums. Shoes with reliable grip on wet volcanic rock and rooty forest trails are essential — aggressive lugs perform better than race flats here. Poles are worth considering for the long climb out of Boaventura and will pay dividends on the technical descent into Machico. Start fueling within the first 30 minutes regardless of how good you feel; the climb ahead will demand it.
