Mountain Ultra Trail by UTMB – MUT Marathon by UTMB
George
Race guide
Updated 18 July 2026
The MUT Marathon by UTMB is the 43 km distance of the Mountain Ultra Trail weekend in George, on South Africa's Garden Route. At 2,087 m of positive climbing and a high point of 986 m, it packs serious mountain vertical into a marathon-length day. The route starts at 239 m, climbs hard into the hills, and returns to a finish at 238 m, meaning almost every metre you gain must also be given back. This is a true trail marathon rather than a road distance run on dirt. The bulk of the climbing is concentrated in the first two-thirds of the course, over Montagu Pass and up to Tierkop, before a long descent brings you back down toward George. Runners who respect the early climbing and keep something for the descent to the Trail Kiosk and the line will fare best.
The course and terrain
The MUT Marathon runs 43 km with 2,087 m of ascent, starting at 239 m and finishing at 238 m in George. That near-identical start and finish elevation disguises a demanding profile: with over 2,000 m of climbing packed into the route, the day is a sequence of substantial climbs and descents rather than any flat running. The high point of the course is 986 m. The route passes four waypoints: the start, Montagu Pass at 15.1 km (739 m), Tierkop at 28.6 km (674 m), the Trail Kiosk at 41.4 km (249 m), and the finish at 43 km. The climbing to Montagu Pass and on toward the high point above Tierkop forms the heart of the course, on the mixed jeep track, forestry road and mountain singletrack typical of the George trails. Once you crest the high ground the trail drops steeply back toward town.
Where the race is decided
The race is shaped by two big efforts. The first is the long climb from the start at 239 m up to Montagu Pass at 15.1 km (739 m) — roughly 500 m of net gain concentrated in the opening 15 km. The second is the continued climbing beyond Montagu Pass toward the day's 986 m high point before Tierkop at 28.6 km (674 m). Together these two sections account for the majority of the 2,087 m of ascent and will define how much you have left for the finish. From Tierkop the course drops hard: from 674 m at 28.6 km down to the Trail Kiosk at 41.4 km (249 m), a descent of more than 400 m over the closing 13 km. This is where a controlled climber can reel in runners who spent themselves on Montagu Pass. The final 1.6 km from the Trail Kiosk to the finish at 238 m is short and gentle, so the real selection happens on that long descent off Tierkop.
Pacing and fuelling
The cut-offs frame the day clearly: Montagu Pass at 15.1 km closes at Sat 12:00, Tierkop at 28.6 km closes at Sat 17:00, and the finish at 43 km closes at Sat 20:00. The generous five-hour window between Montagu Pass and Tierkop reflects how much climbing sits in that middle section — do not be alarmed if your pace there feels slow, because the vertical is the reason. Bank time on the runnable early kilometres and on the long descent after Tierkop rather than trying to force the climbs. With aid at Montagu Pass and Tierkop bracketing the hardest terrain, fuel deliberately at each. The gaps between checkpoints are long for a marathon — around 15 km to Montagu Pass, 13.5 km on to Tierkop, and 13 km more to the Trail Kiosk — so carry enough fluid and calories to be self-sufficient between them. Fill up fully at Tierkop before committing to the descent, since the closing stretch to the Trail Kiosk and finish is the last chance to pay for tired legs with good nutrition.
Conditions to expect
George and the surrounding Outeniqua hills can serve up fast-changing Garden Route weather. The 986 m high point is not high altitude, but the exposed climbs over Montagu Pass and around Tierkop leave you at the mercy of sun, wind and the occasional cold front. A dry, warm morning low down can become cool and damp on the tops, so pack for both. Because more than 400 m of descent is compressed into the final 13 km off Tierkop, the closing stretch is run on tired legs and, if the weather has turned, potentially slick trail. Shoes with dependable grip and a disciplined, controlled descent will protect your quads and keep you upright to the finish at 238 m. Start steady on the long climb to Montagu Pass, keep a buffer to the mid-course cut-offs, and treat the descent to the Trail Kiosk as the part of the race worth saving your legs for.
