Kopparnäs Coast Trail
Inkoo (Kopparnäs/Sandviken)
Race guide
Updated 29 June 2026
The Kopparnäs Coast Trail is a 20 km trail race set along the coastal landscape of Inkoo, starting and finishing at Sandviken beach in the Kopparnäs area of southern Finland. With only 96 metres of total elevation gain and a high point of just 42 metres, this is one of the flattest trail races you will find — but flat does not mean easy. The appeal here lies in the terrain itself: coastal forest paths, rocky shoreline sections, and the kind of low-lying Baltic scenery that makes every kilometre feel distinctly Nordic. It is an accessible distance for first-time trail runners and a fast course for experienced runners chasing a strong time.
Course & Terrain
The race covers 20.3 km of coastal trail in the Kopparnäs and Sandviken area of Inkoo, returning to the start at Sandviken beach for the finish. The route is predominantly flat, with virtually no sustained climbing — the elevation profile barely tops 42 metres at its highest point and accumulates just 96 metres of positive gain across the entire course. Expect a mix of natural trail surfaces typical of the Finnish coast: rooted forest singletrack, sandy sections near the shoreline, and rocky outcrops that demand attention underfoot. Technical difficulty is low to moderate, but loose rocks and exposed tree roots mean trail shoes with decent grip are a better choice than road shoes.
Decisive Sections & Where the Race Is Won
Given the minimal elevation change, the race is decided on running efficiency and sustained pace rather than climbing ability. The section leading into and out of the timing point at 5.9 km — essentially the first major landmark — gives you an early read on your effort level. Water station 1 arrives almost immediately after at 6.7 km, so there is no need to carry heavy from the start. The longest gap between aid is from water station 1 at 6.7 km to water station 2 at 13.1 km — a 6.4 km stretch where maintaining rhythm on variable coastal trail is the key challenge. Runners who push too hard in the first half often find the final 7 km back to Sandviken harder than the elevation data suggests.
Pacing & Fuelling Strategy
With a finish cut-off of 15:00 on race day and a flat course, the majority of runners will be targeting times well within that window, making this a race where effort management over a consistent 20 km matters more than tactical surges. Start conservatively and use the first water station at 6.7 km as your first genuine check-in point. Carry at least one gel or equivalent energy source for the 6.4 km gap between water stations 1 and 2, and top up fluids at each of the three water stations — particularly important in warmer summer conditions. Water station 3 at 17.2 km comes with just over 3 km to go, making it a useful final push marker. A handheld bottle or small soft flask is plenty; a full pack is unnecessary for this distance and profile.
Conditions to Expect
Kopparnäs and the Inkoo archipelago coast sit in southern Finland, and race conditions will depend heavily on the time of year the event is held. Summer editions can bring warm, humid weather with temperatures that make even flat terrain feel demanding — sun exposure is a real factor on open coastal sections. The area is known for its mild maritime climate relative to inland Finland, but morning starts near the water can still carry a chill. Insects, particularly mosquitoes and horseflies, can be a genuine nuisance on sheltered forest sections in summer, so consider lightweight coverage or repellent. Trails drain reasonably well but can be muddy after rain, especially on rooted forest sections.
