Gauja Trail by UTMB – Gauja Trail 50 K
Ratnieki
Race guide
Updated 18 July 2026
The Gauja Trail 50K by UTMB is a 53 km point-to-point through Latvia's Gauja National Park, running from Ratnieki to a finish near Ozolkalns. With only 908 m of total climbing and a high point of just 114 m, it is a fast, low-lying ultra — a course where efficiency and steady running matter far more than mountain climbing legs. The route links Ratnieki, Ligatne, the Zvartes Iezis sandstone cliff area and Ozolkalns before the finish, with cut-offs building through Sunday afternoon and evening. For runners it offers a rare thing in the UTMB world: an ultra distance without the vertical, ideal for a first 50 km or for chasing a genuinely quick time on runnable terrain.
The course and terrain
The course starts at Ratnieki (91 m) and runs to Ligatne at 15.8 km (58 m), Zvartes Iezis at 29.1 km (41 m), Ozolkalns at 43.3 km (105 m) and the finish at 52.7 km (104 m). The elevations tell the whole story: the entire route stays between roughly 40 m and 114 m, making this one of the flattest ultras in the series with just 908 m of climbing across 53 km. Rather than mountain paths, expect rolling forest and river-valley trail through the Gauja National Park, passing the Zvartes Iezis sandstone cliffs on the river. The three intermediate checkpoints at Ligatne, Zvartes Iezis and Ozolkalns divide the course into segments of roughly 14 to 16 km, so plan your carrying and fuelling around those spacings — the longest gap between support is the 13.3 km from Ligatne to Zvartes Iezis and the 14.2 km from Zvartes Iezis to Ozolkalns.
Where the race is won and lost
With no significant climb — the low point at Zvartes Iezis is 41 m and the high point only 114 m — this race is not decided on a mountain. The 908 m of gain is spread as gentle undulation across the whole 53 km, so the decisive factor is sustained running economy: the ability to hold a strong, even pace lap after lap without the natural walking breaks that climbs would otherwise force. The timed checkpoints structure the effort. Zvartes Iezis at 29.1 km carries a Sunday 13:15 cut-off, Ozolkalns at 43.3 km a 16:30 cut-off, and the finish a 19:30 cut-off. On flat, runnable ground these give ample margin for most, but they also mean there is no climbing to hide behind — anyone who fades will lose time steadily rather than in one hard section. The second half, from Zvartes Iezis through Ozolkalns to the finish, is where a well-managed early pace pays off and where over-eager starters tend to slow.
How to pace and fuel it
This is an ultra to run, not hike. The cut-offs — 13:15 at Zvartes Iezis (29.1 km), 16:30 at Ozolkalns (43.3 km) and 19:30 at the finish — are comfortable on flat terrain, so the goal for most is a steady, efficient pace rather than survival. Start controlled out of Ratnieki, settle into a rhythm through Ligatne, and resist pushing the pace early when the flat profile makes fast running feel easy. Fuel around the checkpoint spacing: the 13 to 16 km gaps between Ligatne, Zvartes Iezis and Ozolkalns mean carrying water and calories for roughly 90 minutes to two hours between stops. Because the flat course gives few excuses to walk and eat, build a discipline of taking on fuel on the move at regular intervals. Top up thoroughly at Zvartes Iezis and Ozolkalns, the two checkpoints that anchor the back half, before pressing on to the finish.
Conditions to expect
The Gauja 50K runs low and flat through the Gauja National Park, so conditions are set by the forest and river valley rather than altitude — the course never rises above 114 m. There is no exposed high ground and no mountain weather, but equally little natural cooling, so heat and humidity can become the main challenge on a warm Sunday, particularly over an ultra-length day. Low-lying river-valley and sandstone-cliff terrain around Zvartes Iezis can hold moisture, so expect soft or slick footing in places after rain despite the gentle gradients. With well-spaced checkpoints and a generous evening cut-off, the practical demands are about managing hydration and steady effort over 53 km rather than coping with climbs or exposure. Dress for the day's temperature and carry enough water to bridge the 13 to 16 km segments between aid.
