Ultra-Trail Shudao by UTMB® – ESD 20K
Zhaohua Ancient Town
Race guide
Updated 18 July 2026
The ESD 20K is the short-distance race at Ultra-Trail Shudao by UTMB, a 22 km loop that starts and finishes in Zhaohua Ancient Town. With 845 m of positive climbing and a high point of 1,103 m, it is the most accessible entry point into the Shudao event, but it is still a genuine trail race with real vertical rather than a flat fun run. Set in the historic Shu road country, the ESD packs its climbing into a compact loop: a steady rise out of Zhaohua Ancient Town to the high ground around Niutou Village, then a descent back to the finish. It suits newer trail runners looking for a first mountain-flavoured race as well as faster runners chasing a hard, short effort, and it shares its early trails with the longer Shudao distances so you get a real taste of the terrain that defines the event.
The course: a compact 22 km loop
The ESD 20K is a single loop of 22 km from Zhaohua Ancient Town (468 m) back to Zhaohua Ancient Town, with 845 m of total ascent and a high point of 1,103 m. That is a meaningful amount of climbing for the distance, averaging around 38 m per kilometre, so while this is the shortest Shudao race it is far from flat. The elevation is gained on the way out and given back on the way home, giving the loop a clear climb-then-descend shape. The checkpoint profile is simple and easy to plan around. From the start at Zhaohua Ancient Town (468 m) the trail climbs to Zhongjunzhang at 8.2 km (869 m), continues up to the high ground near Niutou Village at 13.2 km (931 m), and then descends back to Zhaohua Ancient Town (468 m) at 21.5 km. With just a handful of points on the loop, the ESD is straightforward to navigate mentally: climb steadily to around the 13 km mark, then run the descent home.
Where the climb is: the pull to Niutou Village
The defining effort of the ESD is the sustained climb through the first half. From Zhaohua Ancient Town (468 m) the course rises around 400 m to Zhongjunzhang at 8.2 km (869 m), then continues climbing to the high ground near Niutou Village at 13.2 km (931 m). Almost all of the day's 845 m of ascent is concentrated in this opening stretch, so how you manage the first 13 km determines the whole race. Once past Niutou Village the loop turns for home, and the closing eight kilometres are largely descent back to Zhaohua Ancient Town (468 m). This is where a controlled climb pays off: runners who paced the ascent sensibly can open up and run the drop strongly, while those who sprinted the early gradient will find their legs less willing on the way down. For a short race, the pattern is decisive - the first half is the effort, the second half is the reward.
Pacing and fuelling
The ESD has a single cut-off, at the finish in Zhaohua Ancient Town (Sun 14:30), which gives runners plenty of time to complete the loop at a comfortable pace. For most competitors the clock is not the concern; the aim is simply to climb the first half well and enjoy the descent. Even so, treat Zhongjunzhang (8.2 km) and Niutou Village (13.2 km) as natural mental checkpoints to gauge your effort against the climb still ahead. At 22 km with 845 m of climb, this is a race where a single well-stocked bottle and a small amount of food will usually see most runners round, but do not neglect fuelling on the climb: arriving at the Niutou Village high point with energy in the tank is what makes the descent to the finish fast and enjoyable. Carry enough fluid to cover the sustained early ascent, especially in warm conditions, and eat a little on the way up rather than waiting until you are already tiring.
Terrain and conditions to expect
The ESD runs through the same mid-mountain country as the longer Shudao races, climbing from Zhaohua Ancient Town at 468 m to high ground around 1,100 m and back. Expect a trail that rises steadily through Zhongjunzhang to the area of Niutou Village before descending home, on ground that is more mountainous than the modest distance might suggest. The lowest and typically warmest sections are at the start and finish in Zhaohua Ancient Town. With a Sun 14:30 finish cut-off, this is a daytime race for essentially all participants, so night-running kit is not the concern here; instead prepare for the heat and exposure of a sustained daytime climb. Altitude is not a factor at a high point of 1,103 m. For a first mountain trail race the ESD is an excellent proving ground: short enough to be approachable, but with enough climbing and real trail terrain to teach the pacing habits that the longer Shudao distances demand.
