Race guide

Updated 19 July 2026

The Transylvania 100 is a 102 km loop race starting and finishing at the iconic Bran Castle, threading through some of Romania's most dramatic mountain terrain. With 5685 m of vertical gain and a high point of 2501 m at the Omu massif, the race is a genuine high-alpine ultra that demands technical competence alongside raw endurance. The route visits the Bucegi Plateau, the Leaota and Piatra Craiului ridges, and a string of mountain cabins and refuges, giving the course a classic feel rooted in Romanian mountain tradition. Cut-offs span two days, with a final deadline of 12:00 on Day 2 at Bran Castle — meaning competitors have roughly 30 hours to complete the course.

Course Overview & Terrain

The race begins at Bran Castle (760 m) and immediately climbs toward Malaiesti Cabin at 12.9 km and 1700 m, setting the tone: sustained, steep ascents on mountain trails that alternate between forest paths, rocky ridgelines, and open alpine plateaus. From Pestera at 27.2 km the course rises sharply to CP Omu II at 34.6 km and 2455 m — the highest point on the course — before dropping dramatically to Busteni at 1021 m by km 45.1. The second half mirrors this rhythm: a climb back up to Piatra Arsa Cabin (2003 m, km 53.3), a descent to Bolboci Cabin (1435 m, km 62.2), another push up to Strunga Refuge (1870 m, km 70.1), and a long descent to Moieciu de Sus (1013 m, km 82.4) before the final roller back over Poiana Gutanu (1629 m, km 90.7) and down to the finish. Terrain varies considerably: expect loose rock and boulder fields on the high Bucegi plateau, rooted forest singletrack on the descents, and grassy ridgeline paths on the approach back to Bran. Navigation is generally well-marked but the high alpine sections above treeline require attention in poor visibility.

The Decisive Climbs — Where the Race Is Won and Lost

The ascent to Omu II is the defining challenge of the first half. From Pestera (1626 m) at km 27.2 to the summit checkpoint at 2455 m by km 34.6, runners gain roughly 830 m over just 7.4 km — a relentlessly steep push that, combined with already 27 km in the legs, empties tanks fast. The cut-off at Omu II is 15:30 on Day 1, so runners starting to drift behind pace feel the pressure here acutely. The climb from Busteni (1021 m) back up to Piatra Arsa (2003 m) between km 45 and 53 is the second major gut-check: after the longest descent of the race and the Day 1 low point, legs must produce another 1000 m of climbing. The final climb over Poiana Gutanu (1629 m) at km 90.7 — coming after a long night and with only 12 km to the finish — catches tired runners by surprise. Those who have managed energy well through the night section will pull away here; those who went too hard to Omu will be walking.

Pacing & Cut-Off Strategy

The cut-off structure is tight relative to the terrain. Reaching Malaiesti Cabin (km 12.9) by 09:00 requires a solid early effort, but the real pinch points are Omu II (15:30, Day 1) and Busteni (18:00, Day 1). Plan your effort so you arrive at Omu with 30–45 minutes of buffer — the descent from 2455 m to 1021 m is technical and should not be rushed on depleted legs. The midnight cut-off at Bolboci Cabin (km 62.2) marks the transition to night running; if you reach Bolboci with meaningful buffer, the remainder is manageable. Moieciu de Sus (km 82.4) has a 07:00 Day 2 cut-off — roughly the dawn checkpoint — and arriving here with energy in reserve sets you up for the final climb to Poiana Gutanu. Build your pacing plan around five key markers: Malaiesti, Omu, Busteni, Bolboci, and Moieciu, and treat each as a mini-race segment. The overall cut-off window of approximately 30 hours suits a strong mountain runner aiming for 22–26 hours and a back-of-pack runner who needs to run with purpose throughout.

Fueling & Crew Access

Crew access is available at five points: Pestera (km 27.2), Busteni (km 45.1), Piatra Arsa Cabin (km 53.3), Bolboci Cabin (km 62.2), and Moieciu de Sus (km 82.4). This is generous coverage and allows a well-organised crew to hand off hot food and fresh kit at the critical mid-race low point in Busteni and again in the valley at Moieciu before the final push. Between Pestera and Busteni — a 17.9 km stretch that includes the Omu high point — there is no crew access, so carry sufficient calories and fluid for that demanding alpine section. On the high plateau above 2000 m, water sources can be limited and mountain weather unpredictable, so top up at every checkpoint. For fueling strategy, treat the Busteni crew stop as your main resupply: eat a proper meal, change kit if needed, and leave with enough fuel to reach Bolboci. Night running from Bolboci onward typically suppresses appetite — force yourself to eat at Strunga Refuge (km 70.1) and Moieciu even if you don't feel like it.

Conditions & What to Expect

The Transylvania 100 crosses exposed ridges and plateaus up to 2501 m, where conditions can change rapidly regardless of the season. The Bucegi Plateau around Omu is notorious for fast-moving cloud, wind, and — in early or late season — snow and ice. Even in summer, temperatures at the summit can be 10–15°C colder than at Bran Castle, and afternoon thunderstorms are common in the Carpathians. Mandatory kit should be taken seriously: a proper waterproof shell, insulation layer, and headlamp are non-negotiable given that the route spends several hours at altitude and passes through a full night. The descent from Omu to Busteni involves significant exposure and becomes very slippery when wet. Night temperatures in the valleys around 1000 m can still drop sharply, particularly at Bolboci and Moieciu, so have a warm layer accessible at your crew bags. Trail shoes with aggressive grip are recommended for the loose and rocky high-alpine terrain; cushioned but grippy outsoles will also serve well on the longer forest descents.
