King's Ascent 28K is the short, sharp challenge at Trail of the Kings - Lake Toba by UTMB, a loop starting and finishing at Waterfront City Pangururan on the shores of Lake Toba. Despite the 28K label, the course measures 24 km, but it packs 1103 m of climbing into that distance, almost all of it delivered in one enormous ascent. It is a race defined by a single mountain rather than a rolling profile. From the start at 907 m, the route climbs to the summit high point of 1955 m at Pusuk Buhit before plunging back down to the finish at 905 m. With a Saturday 07:00 start cut-off and a Saturday 16:00 finish cut-off, it is an accessible distance that nonetheless demands genuine climbing strength and confident descending. Runners come for the concentrated vertical and the setting high above one of the world's great volcanic lakes.

The course: a loop from Waterfront City Pangururan

The race begins and ends at Waterfront City Pangururan. From the start at 907 m, the course climbs to Sitao-Tao at 8.6 km (1240 m), continues up to the summit of Pusuk Buhit at 13.1 km (1955 m), then descends to Rumah Hela Parking at 15.7 km (1318 m) and drops back to the finish at 23.6 km (905 m). The total is 24 km with 1103 m of ascent and a high point of 1955 m at Pusuk Buhit. The shape could hardly be more concentrated: over 1000 m of climbing is gained across the first 13 km, followed by a steep, sustained descent over the final 11 km. Rumah Hela Parking, at 15.7 km, is the marked crew point and sits on the downhill side of the summit — a natural place for support to wait. This is a course to be read as two halves, an ascent and a descent, rather than a series of undulations.

The decisive climb to Pusuk Buhit

Everything hinges on the ascent of Pusuk Buhit. From the start at 907 m the climb to Sitao-Tao (8.6 km, 1240 m) is the gentler first step, gaining around 330 m. The real work comes between Sitao-Tao and the 1955 m summit at 13.1 km: roughly 715 m of climb over just 4.5 km, a steep and relentless pull that will reduce most runners to a power hike. Pacing this section conservatively is essential — there is no rolling terrain in which to recover, only up. Once over the top, the race becomes a descent. The drop from the summit to Rumah Hela Parking (15.7 km, 1318 m) sheds more than 630 m in around 2.6 km, so it is steep and technical enough to demand full attention on tired legs. From there the trail keeps losing height all the way to the finish at 905 m. Runners who climb within themselves and descend with control will make up far more time on the way down than those who empty the tank reaching the summit.

Pacing and fuelling a big-climb 24K

With a start cut-off of Saturday 07:00 and a finish cut-off of Saturday 16:00, the King's Ascent gives a generous window for the distance, which reflects how demanding the terrain is rather than how long it takes to cover 24 km. The smart plan is to treat the first 13 km as a single sustained effort to the summit, holding an effort you can maintain to the top, then shift focus entirely to smooth, safe descending. Fuelling should be front-loaded for the climb. Carry enough fluid and calories to be self-sufficient from the start through the summit, since the marked crew point at Rumah Hela Parking does not come until 15.7 km, on the far side of Pusuk Buhit. Take on carbohydrate steadily on the way up rather than waiting for the top, and use the crew stop to refill for the descent. In the heat and humidity typical of this equatorial region, water management on the exposed climb is as important as calories.

Conditions and setting to expect

Trail of the Kings sits on Samosir, the great island within Lake Toba, and the King's Ascent climbs Pusuk Buhit, a peak steeped in local significance that rises to 1955 m above the lake. The setting is spectacular, with the summit offering height and exposure well above the 905 m start, but it also means real weather variability: mornings can be cool and misty on the tops while the lower slopes turn hot and humid as the day builds toward the Saturday 16:00 finish cut-off. Expect tropical trail conditions — potentially humid, and slick if it has rained, particularly on the steep descent off the summit. A trail shoe with dependable grip is important for the sharp drop from Pusuk Buhit to Rumah Hela Parking and on down to the finish. Because the course is one big up and one big down, the runners who prepare specifically for sustained climbing and confident technical descending, and who manage heat and hydration on the exposed ascent, will get the most out of this short but serious race.
