Race guide

Updated 19 July 2026

The Tenerife Bluetrail 82k by UTMB is the queen distance of Tenerife's flagship trail weekend, a point-to-point journey that starts high in the pine town of Vilaflor (1427 m), climbs into the island's rooftop terrain around 2520 m, and finishes at the Atlantic in Puerto de la Cruz (12 m). Over 82 km it gains 3064 m and, remarkably, reaches its high point at 2520 m, making it as much a high-altitude traverse as a mountain ultra. What sets the 82k apart from the shorter Bluetrail distances is its opening: rather than climbing from low ground, it begins already at altitude and pushes higher across the Teide-region high country to El Filo (2273 m) and Izaña (2286 m) before the long descent to the sea. It is a race of two enormous halves, a sustained high-altitude stretch followed by a coast-bound plunge of well over 2000 m, run from an early Saturday start through to a Sunday-midnight finish. This is the Bluetrail's defining challenge and its most complete mountain-to-ocean experience.

The course: Vilaflor to Puerto de la Cruz

The 82k runs point-to-point from Vilaflor at 1427 m to Puerto de la Cruz at 12 m, taking in nine checkpoints: Vilaflor Av at 11.8 km (1426 m), Madre del Agua at 16.4 km (1713 m), El Filo at 34.1 km (2273 m), Izaña at 41.5 km (2286 m), Picachos at 55.2 km (1686 m), Base del Asomadero at 65 km (490 m), Tigaiga at 72.7 km (284 m), Marítim at 78.5 km (47 m) and the finish at 82 km (12 m). Izaña at 41.5 km and Tigaiga at 72.7 km are crew points, bracketing the high country and the coastal run-in. The profile is unlike the shorter courses because it starts high and climbs higher. From Vilaflor the trail undulates through the pine belt to Madre del Agua at 1713 m, then makes a long, high traverse to El Filo (2273 m) and Izaña (2286 m), passing the course high point of 2520 m in the Teide-region high country. From Izaña the route commits to the coast, dropping through Picachos at 1686 m and then plummeting to Asomadero at 490 m and onward through Tigaiga to the sea. Expect thin, exposed high terrain early and warmer coastal slopes late.

Where the race is decided: the high country and the great descent

The first crux is altitude and sustained high ground. The course reaches 2520 m and holds elevation across El Filo (2273 m) and Izaña (2286 m) between roughly 34 and 41 km, terrain where thinner air and exposure sap runners who started too fast on the climbs out of Vilaflor and Madre del Agua. Managing effort across this long high section, staying within yourself to Izaña, is what preserves the legs for what follows. The second and decisive crux is the descent. From Izaña at 2286 m the course loses around 2270 m to Base del Asomadero at 490 m, an immense and sustained drop that passes over Picachos (1686 m) on the way down. This is one of the biggest single descents on the whole Bluetrail programme, and it lands late in the race on legs already worn by 40 km of high-mountain running. Quad durability and braking economy decide the outcome here: runners who reach Asomadero with functional legs can run strongly through Tigaiga (284 m) to the coast, while those who arrive shattered face a long, painful grind to Puerto de la Cruz.

Pacing and fueling around the cut-offs

The cut-offs frame a long day and night: Vilaflor Av at Sat 08:10, Madre del Agua at Sat 09:20, Izaña at Sat 14:30, Picachos at Sat 17:00, Base del Asomadero at Sat 19:25, Tigaiga at Sat 22:05, and the finish at Puerto de la Cruz at Sun 00:00. The early checkpoints come quickly, Vilaflor Av by 08:10 and Madre del Agua by 09:20, so the opening pace through the pine belt cannot lag, while the generous gap to Izaña at 14:30 reflects the sustained high-altitude traverse in between. Aid spacing is significant, with long carries such as Madre del Agua (16.4 km) to El Filo (34.1 km) high on the mountain, and Izaña (41.5 km) to Picachos (55.2 km) on the upper descent. Use Izaña, the crew point at 41.5 km, to fully resupply before committing to the great descent, and Tigaiga, the second crew point at 72.7 km, to prepare for the warm final push to the coast. Fuel consistently across the high country while the aerobic effort allows it, because the long descent that follows makes eating harder just as calorie demand stays high. Carry enough fluid for the high, dry, exposed sections and again for the warmer coastal checkpoints below 300 m.

Conditions to expect

This is the widest-ranging course on the Bluetrail calendar, spanning from a 2520 m high point down to sea level. Up in the Teide-region high country around El Filo and Izaña, expect cool, dry, exposed conditions and thinner air; as the route descends through Picachos to Tigaiga (284 m) and Marítim (47 m), conditions turn warmer and more humid. With an early Saturday start and a Sun 00:00 cut-off, the race runs deep into the night, so all but the fastest runners will descend from Picachos in the dark, making a reliable headlamp with spare power non-negotiable. Underfoot the terrain is high-mountain volcanic trail early and loose, rocky descending later, with the enormous drop from Izaña through Picachos to Asomadero as the most technical and fatigue-sensitive part of the course. The combination of altitude, exposure, 3064 m of climbing and a coast-bound descent of over 2000 m on tired legs makes pacing discipline and descending skill the decisive factors. Prepare for a genuine temperature swing between summit and sea, protect your quads through the long fall to Asomadero, and treat the night-time volcanic descent to Puerto de la Cruz with the caution a race of this scale demands.
