KAT100 by UTMB – Speed Trail
Fieberbrunn
Race guide
Updated 19 July 2026
The KAT100 by UTMB Speed Trail is the shortest distance of the KAT100 by UTMB, a 24 km loop from Fieberbrunn in the Austrian Tirol. Despite its length it is unmistakably a mountain race: 1,532 m of climbing and a high point of 2,085 m mean this is a fast, sharp introduction to the KAT terrain rather than an easy trail run. Starting and finishing at 783 m in Fieberbrunn, the Speed Trail is built around one dominant climb to the highest ground of the whole KAT100 weekend, followed by technical descents back to town. With a final cut-off at Fieberbrunn of Saturday 15:00, it suits runners who can climb hard, descend confidently, and want the high-alpine character of the KAT series in a single concentrated effort.
The Course: A 24 km Climb-and-Descent Loop
The Speed Trail covers 24 km with 1,532 m of ascent, looping out from and back to Fieberbrunn at 783 m. The course wastes no time gaining height: from the start it climbs to Streuböden at 1,199 m (5.4 km) and continues up to Wildseeloderhaus at 1,844 m by 10.1 km, taking you to the day's high ground near the 2,085 m mark in the first third of the race. From that high point the route turns downhill, descending to Lärchfilzhochalm at 1,363 m (16.8 km) before the final drop back into Fieberbrunn at 24 km. In essence it is a single sustained climb followed by a long, technical descent — a simple shape, but a demanding one, because almost all of the vertical is concentrated into the opening half and the return is steep enough to test tired legs.
Where the Race Is Decided
For a race this short, the Speed Trail is decided almost entirely on the opening climb. The ascent from Fieberbrunn (783 m) through Streuböden (1,199 m) to Wildseeloderhaus (1,844 m) gains over 1,000 m in about 10 km, and how you pace it defines your day. Because there is little flat ground to recover on afterwards, going into the red on this climb leaves nothing for the technical descent that follows. The second half is where places change hands. The descent from Wildseeloderhaus down through Lärchfilzhochalm to Fieberbrunn is long and steep, and strong, controlled downhill running is the skill that separates finishers here. Runners who climb within their limit and stay light and accurate on the descent will make up ground on those who emptied themselves reaching the top. Treat the summit not as the finish line but as the midpoint of your effort.
Pacing and Fueling It
The Speed Trail's cut-offs are set at Wildseeloderhaus at 10.1 km (Sat 12:00), Lärchfilzhochalm at 16.8 km (Sat 13:30) and the Fieberbrunn finish at 15:00. For most runners these gates give room to race the distance hard, but the tightest real constraint is your own pacing on the single big climb — set off too fast and the top half of the ascent to Wildseeloderhaus becomes a grind that eats your descent. At 24 km this is short enough to run on minimal supplies, but the intensity and the altitude gain still demand fuel and fluid on the climb. Take on calories and drink steadily on the way up to Streuböden and Wildseeloderhaus, when your effort is highest, rather than trying to catch up on the descent. A light layer is worth carrying for the exposed high point near 2,085 m, where conditions can differ sharply from the valley start.
Conditions to Expect
Though it is the shortest KAT100 distance, the Speed Trail shares the highest point on the calendar at 2,085 m, so it puts you on genuinely exposed alpine terrain around Wildseeloderhaus. Expect the summit area to be cooler and windier than the 783 m start in Fieberbrunn, and be prepared for the temperature to drop noticeably as you gain height on the opening climb. The Saturday timing and 15:00 finish cut-off mean the race is run in daylight, but weather in the Kitzbühel Alps can change fast at altitude, so a packable wind or waterproof layer is a sensible precaution even on a fast day. The core challenge is straightforward but real: a big, sustained climb to over 1,800 m followed by a steep, technical descent. Runners who pace the ascent sensibly, keep fueling, and descend with control will get the most out of this compact mountain race.
