Race guide

Updated 18 July 2026

The Kranjska Gora 25K is the short-distance option at Julian Alps Trail Run by UTMB, a 25 km loop that starts and finishes in the alpine resort town of Kranjska Gora (808 m) in north-west Slovenia. With 967 m of positive gain and a high point of just 1081 m, it is the most approachable of the event's distances, an ideal entry into UTMB-series trail running or a fast blast for experienced runners. This is a loop that rewards steady, rhythmic running. The checkpoints stay low and close in altitude, so rather than one lung-busting mountain climb you get manageable ups and downs on classic Julian Alps valley and forest trail, with the peaks of the Martuljek group as a backdrop. A single mid-afternoon cut-off keeps the day honest without making it a race against the clock for most finishers.

The course and terrain

The route is a loop out of Kranjska Gora (808 m). It runs first to Gozd Martuljek at 10 km (753 m), the lowest point among the named checkpoints, before turning back westward through Podkoren at 20.1 km (855 m) and returning to Kranjska Gora at 24.5 km (812 m) to close the circuit. With only three intermediate references and a high point of 1081 m, the profile is gentle by Julian Alps standards, spreading 967 m of climb across the full 25 km. The checkpoint altitudes, all sitting between roughly 753 m and 855 m, show that the climbing happens on the ground between them rather than in one sustained ascent. Expect runnable forest and valley trail linking the settlements of the upper Sava valley, with the climb to the 1081 m high point delivered in the sections away from the aid stations. It is a course you can settle into and run for long stretches, which makes pacing discipline more valuable than pure climbing legs.

Where the race is decided

Because the loop tops out at only 1081 m and no single checkpoint stands far above the others, this race is decided by consistency rather than by one make-or-break climb. The most testing ground lies in the middle of the loop, between Gozd Martuljek (10 km, 753 m) and Podkoren (20.1 km, 855 m), where the course regains height toward the 1081 m high point before easing back down. Runners who keep their effort even through that central stretch, hiking only what genuinely needs hiking, will hold their pace far better than those who go out hard on the early kilometres. The final 4.4 km from Podkoren (855 m) back to the finish at Kranjska Gora (812 m) is close to flat in net terms and offers a genuine chance to run home strong. Anyone who has paced the first two-thirds sensibly can push this closing leg; anyone who overcooked the early running will simply be hanging on.

Pacing and fuelling to the cut-off

There is a single published barrier: the Kranjska Gora finish at 24.5 km, with a cut-off of Sun 14:30. For most runners that is a comfortable margin on a 25 km loop with under a thousand metres of climb, but it does mean you should not treat the early kilometres as a stroll if you are toward the back of the field. Reach Gozd Martuljek and Podkoren feeling in control and the finish looks after itself. With aid roughly every 10 km, then 10 km, then a short 4.4 km to the line, this is a distance many will cover on modest fuelling, but do not skip it. Take on carbohydrate and fluid at Gozd Martuljek and Podkoren rather than waiting until you feel empty, and carry enough to bridge the two longer 10 km legs. Because the trail is largely runnable, your energy burn stays steady rather than spiking, so a simple, regular intake plan works well here.

Conditions to expect

Kranjska Gora sits in a high alpine valley, and with a high point of 1081 m the 25K stays mostly in the forested and valley terrain below the big peaks. That keeps conditions more sheltered than the longer, higher courses at the same event, but Julian Alps weather can still turn quickly, so pack for the possibility of rain, cooler forest sections and warmer open ground on the same loop. Underfoot you can expect the mix typical of the region: forest tracks, valley paths and some rockier trail where the route climbs toward its high point. Nothing on the profile demands technical mountain-descending skill the way the event's Sky Trail distance does, so a comfortable, moderately cushioned trail shoe suits most runners. Check the forecast the day before, carry a light layer for the exposed and higher sections, and enjoy one of the more runnable introductions to the Julian Alps.
