Updated 18 July 2026

The 21K is the shortest distance at the Istria 100 by UTMB and its most accessible, a 22 km run that starts in the hilltop art town of Grožnjan and drops down to the Adriatic coast to finish at Umag. With only 106 m of climb and a high point of 297 m, it is overwhelmingly a net-downhill, fast course — an ideal entry into the UTMB weekend for newer trail runners or a speed day for those wanting a hard, short effort. Rather than the sustained climbing of the longer Istria distances, the 21K is about carrying momentum from the highlands to the sea. The route loses nearly 300 m of elevation overall across just 22 km, passing through the medieval town of Buje before the final stretch to Umag, making it a course where controlled, confident downhill running is the whole game.

The course and terrain

The 21K covers 22 km with just 106 m of ascent, starting in Grožnjan at 281 m and finishing at Umag at 7 m on the coast. The single intermediate checkpoint is Buje at 6.9 km (153 m). The elevation numbers tell the story plainly: from a high point of 297 m the course trends downhill to sea level, with only modest rolling to break up the descent. This is the gentlest profile of the Istria event by a wide margin. Underfoot, expect classic Istrian trail — gravel and vineyard tracks, forest paths and rocky karst sections — as the route threads from the hills down toward the coast. The drop from Grožnjan at 281 m to Buje at 153 m in the first 6.9 km sets an early downhill tone, and the ground from Buje to Umag continues losing height to the finish. It is a course that rewards runners comfortable moving quickly on mixed, sometimes loose surfaces rather than those geared for grinding climbs.

Where the race is decided

With so little climbing, the 21K is won and lost on the descents and on holding pace. The opening kilometres from Grožnjan (281 m) down to Buje (153 m) invite a fast start, and it is easy to spend too much on the early downhill and arrive at Buje with legs already buzzing. Judging that first descent — quick but controlled — is the key tactical call of the race. From Buje at 6.9 km the course continues its net drop toward Umag at 7 m over the remaining 15 km. On a downhill-dominant course the runners who finish strongest are those who keep their form efficient and their footing sure on the karst and gravel, rather than those who simply let gravity take over and blow their quads early. Because the terrain is fast, small mistakes in pacing or footing cost more here proportionally than on a slower mountain course.

Pacing and fuelling

The cut-offs are straightforward for a short race: Buje closes Sun 11:20 and the Umag finish Sun 14:00, giving a generous window that most runners will beat comfortably. That means pacing is less about surviving cut-offs and more about running the course well — starting under control on the Grožnjan descent, settling into a strong rhythm, and finishing fast into Umag. With a single aid point at Buje (6.9 km) and a total distance of 22 km, fuelling is simple. Most runners can complete the 21K on a single flask or small pack, topping up at Buje if needed, and taking a gel or two to stay sharp on the second half. The main thing is to arrive at the start hydrated and to not underestimate how a fast net-downhill effort can still sap the legs — steady energy keeps the closing kilometres quick rather than ragged.

Conditions to expect

As a spring race running from the Istrian hills to the coast, the 21K can bring mild to warm conditions, with the possibility of sun on the exposed vineyard and ridge sections and cooler air higher up in Grožnjan at the start. Rain can make the karst and gravel slick, so grippy shoes are worth having even on this fast course. The proximity to the Adriatic means the finish at Umag is likely to feel warmer and more humid than the elevated start. The point-to-point format from Grožnjan to Umag means planning transport and any drop bag around a finish away from the start town. For many runners the 21K doubles as a taste of the Istria 100 by UTMB atmosphere and a scenic tour from a historic hill town to the sea — short enough to race hard, but still a genuine trail course that rewards good downhill running and steady conditions management.
