Fruita CO, Mack Exit, Hawkeye Trailhead
Race guide
Updated 18 July 2026
The Desert RATS Trail Running Festival by UTMB – 21K is the festival's shortest distance, a 21 km loop from the Hawkeye Trailhead at the Mack Exit near Fruita, Colorado. With just 481 m of climbing and a high point of 1,644 m, it is a fast, approachable introduction to high-desert trail running — ideal for first-time trail racers, for building speed, or for anyone wanting the Desert RATS experience without committing to the longer 50K or 100K. The course is a compact tour of the same mesa-top singletrack the longer distances use, taking in Crossroads, Pizza Overlook and the Moore Fun trail before looping back to the start. Both the start and finish are crew points, so friends and family can send you off and meet you at the line.
The Course & Terrain
The 21K stays within a narrow altitude band, running between roughly 1,400 m and 1,644 m for its entire length — total climb is only 481 m, so this is genuinely runnable high-desert singletrack rather than a climb-heavy mountain route. From the start at 1,429 m the course reaches Crossroads quickly at 2.8 km (1,440 m), then rises to Pizza Overlook at 5.2 km (1,455 m), which as its name suggests is a viewpoint out over the surrounding desert terrain. From there the route works through the Moore Fun trail section, reaching that checkpoint at 11.8 km (1,400 m) — a low point on the loop — before climbing gently back toward the high point and returning to the finish at 1,429 m. Because the elevation range across the whole course is barely 200 m, the difficulty comes from footing and exposure rather than from any sustained gradient.
Where the Race Is Decided
On a course this short and this flat, the decisive stretch is the second half from Moore Fun (11.8 km) back to the finish. Runners typically go out fast on the gentle early rollers to Crossroads and Pizza Overlook, and the test is whether you can hold that pace once the desert heat builds and the trail turns back toward the high point around the midpoint of the loop. There is only one intermediate cut-off, at Moore Fun (11.8 km) at 11:00, so the single tactical checkpoint is reaching that point comfortably inside the limit. Do that and the finish, with its 13:30 cut-off, is well within reach at almost any steady effort. The margin between the two cut-offs is generous, which makes this a forgiving distance for newer runners while still rewarding those who can run the runnable terrain honestly.
How to Pace & Fuel It
With 21 km, 481 m of climb and two timing gates — Moore Fun at 11:00 and the finish at 13:30 — this is a distance most runners will complete on a single set of bottles and a handful of gels. The key pacing error to avoid is overcooking the opening 5 km to Crossroads and Pizza Overlook, which come early and feel easy; bank a sustainable rhythm there and you will run the back half strongly rather than fading in the heat. Both the start and finish are crew points, so you can hand off anything you don't want to carry and refuel immediately at the line. Because the aid is spaced across a short loop, focus your fueling plan on steady sipping and consistent electrolyte intake rather than big stops — the whole point of the 21K is to keep moving and enjoy the desert scenery at the overlooks.
Conditions to Expect
Run near Fruita at around 1,400-1,644 m, this is exposed Colorado high desert with strong sun and very little shade, even over a short course. The finish cut-off of 13:30 means the race unfolds through the warmest part of the day, so heat and dehydration are the main risks despite the modest distance and gentle profile. Carry more water than a 21 km on cooler terrain would demand, and treat electrolytes as essential rather than optional. The footing is typical desert singletrack — rocky and dusty in places — so shoes with reliable grip and a bit of rock protection will help you run the descents off Pizza Overlook and through Moore Fun with confidence. Sun protection, a cap and sunglasses round out a sensible kit for this bright, open loop.
