Amazean Jungle Thailand by UTMB – MIST 20K
Betong Mongkollit Tunnel → Betong Clock Tower
Race guide
Updated 18 July 2026
The MIST 20K is the shortest distance at Amazean Jungle Thailand by UTMB, a 26 km route with 849 m of climbing and a high point of 724 m. It starts at the Betong Mongkollit Tunnel and finishes at the Betong Clock Tower, sharing the opening trails of the longer races and offering a genuine taste of the region's humid jungle terrain in a distance approachable for newer trail runners. With a single intermediate cut-off and a finish deadline of Sunday 14:00, the MIST 20K is short enough to run as a hard effort but demanding enough — thanks to the heat and the climbing — to deserve respect. It is an ideal entry point into the Amazean Jungle experience or a fast, punchy day out for more seasoned runners.
The course: 26 km through the Betong jungle
The MIST 20K covers 25.5 km from the Betong Mongkollit Tunnel at 277 m to the Betong Clock Tower, also at 277 m, with 849 m of total climb packed into a rolling profile. The first and longest leg runs from the start to A1 Kapae Hulu School at 11.2 km (340 m) — a stretch where the net elevation barely changes but the jungle terrain keeps the effort honest. This opening 11 km is the biggest gap between support on the course, so carry enough fluid to cover it comfortably in the heat. From A1 the route continues to A2 Suan Palm Resort at 21.7 km (303 m) before the final 3.8 km run into Betong and the Clock Tower finish. The climbing toward the 724 m high point falls within these middle kilometres, giving the course a clear shape: a long, undulating approach, a climb through the high ground, and a short descent to the line.
Where the effort concentrates
Because the aid stations sit at similar low elevations — A1 at 340 m and A2 at 303 m — the climbing to the 724 m high point happens on the trail between them rather than as one obvious wall on the profile. That means the hardest work comes in the middle of the race, roughly between 11 and 22 km, where the route rises to its high point before dropping back toward the Suan Palm Resort. Runners who charge the flatter opening kilometres can find this climb harder than the numbers suggest, especially once the jungle heat builds. The payoff is a short, quick finish: from A2 at 21.7 km (303 m) the course drops just 3.8 km to the 277 m Clock Tower finish. That is a fast, runnable close if you have paced the middle sensibly, so the strategy is simple — run the opening within yourself, work the climb patiently, and let the final descent bring you home with a strong finish rather than a survival shuffle.
Pacing and fuelling to the cut-offs
There is one intermediate cut-off — A1 Kapae Hulu School closes Sunday 08:00 — and a final cut-off at the Betong Clock Tower of Sunday 14:00, with A2 Suan Palm Resort closing Sunday 12:45. The early A1 deadline reflects the long opening leg, so make sure you move steadily from the start rather than treating the first 11 km as a warm-up; arriving at A1 with margin sets up the rest of the day. With only two aid stations on course and the longest carry being the first 11.2 km, plan your hydration around that opening gap and drink consistently in the humidity. The Betong Clock Tower finish is a crew point, so you can meet support at the line, but the two intermediate stations are not flagged as crew points — carry your own gels or snacks and electrolytes and top up fully at A1 and A2. Even over 26 km, under-fuelling in the heat will cost you on the middle climb.
Conditions to expect
The MIST 20K takes its name from the humid, mist-prone jungle around Betong in southern Thailand, and those conditions are the defining challenge of the day. Even at 26 km the warm, moist air makes every climb feel harder and puts hydration and electrolyte balance at the centre of your race plan. Expect sultry conditions in the lower sections near the tunnel and finish and cooler, damper air on the climb toward the 724 m high point. Jungle trail means potentially wet, rooty and slick footing, so wear shoes with reliable grip and take steps against blisters and chafing early. The course is compact and well-defined, with the bulk of the difficulty in the middle climb and the reward in a short descent to the Clock Tower. Runners who respect the heat, cover the long opening leg without going into deficit, and stay steady on the climb will enjoy a fast, satisfying introduction to the Amazean Jungle terrain.
